“You're Invited!”
Rev. Dr. Jim Bennett
Join us this Wednesday for the
Evensong Service at 6:30 pm!
Greetings!

As we move well into October and fall, we are in the midst of one my favorite times of the year—here in our area, the weather is pleasant, while those who worship with us remotely experience equally welcome shifts from the heat of summer and the appearance of fall foliage that reminds us of the beauty of God’s creation.

Traditionally, it is also harvest season: a time to celebrate the bounty of the season and to prepare for the winter ahead. These themes of celebrating the work that has been done and preparing for the future come together as we move through the season of Stewardship and reflect on the parable of the Great Banquet.

I look forward to being with you on Sunday at 10 a.m. PDT as we reflect on what it means to be on this journey of faith together.

See you soon,
Jim

Please join us immediately following the Sunday service for our Coffee Hour (in-person in Trinity Court or online via Zoom).

Theme for Sunday

This kingdom of God life is not a matter of waking up each morning with a list of chores or an agenda to be tended to, left on our bedside table by the Holy Spirit for us while we slept. We wake up already immersed in a large story of creation and covenant, of Israel and Jesus, the story of Jesus and the stories that Jesus told. We let ourselves be formed by these formative stories, and especially as we listen to the stories that Jesus tells, get a feel for the way he does it, the way he talks, the way he treats people, the Jesus way.

Questions for Reflection
  • Have you given a party and the people you hoped would attend didn’t come?

  • Have you been invited to a party you didn’t expect to or where you didn’t feel you belonged?

  • How do you imagine the Kingdom of God?

  • How do you imagine Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church?
Matthew 21:1-14

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad, so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”
