Summer Sermon

Rev. Joshua Patty

Regional Minister and President

Again this year, our region will provide a recorded sermon that you can use in your congregation during one of your upcoming worship services.

I am recording this sermon: “Useful,” exploring lessons from Paul’s letter to Philemon. We will send out emails to ministers and congregational offices when the sermon is available – on or before July 24. The sermon may be streamed using YouTube or downloaded from the cloud.

Our hope is that offering these recorded sermons 2-3 times each year alleviates some of the pressures congregations face when ministers are on vacation or when they are without a minister. They are a practical and visible way that our regional church supports our congregations and ministers, which is a main focus of our regional ministry as Disciples Together.

Change for Year Book Reporting of Worship Participation

In June, I learned that our general church will ask for worship attendance numbers in a different way in order to better account for digital participation. This change will become explicit in the next reporting period in early 2025, but will be for worship services in 2024.

I hope that you are beginning to find ways to identify and record your participation onsite and online. Even more, I hope that you are finding ways to adapt to these new hybrid types of ministry. The church has always used technology to spread the Gospel (dating back to Paul’s letters, the printing press, and more recent electronic technologies). There has been an adjustment period with many of these technologies, as we are experiencing now with various Internet-based technologies.

The best language to describe participation on location or in digital space is still evolving. Personally, I have found some thoughts from Jim Keat, Digital Minister of Riverside Church (New York), helpful – he now distinguishes onsite and online participation. You also can read some thoughts from our general church distinguishing between attendance and streaming views.

2024 UMW Summer Camps

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 2024 Proclamation Project includes a group of Hispanic preachers who are working as a team to develop a homiletical resource to serve as a practical tool for preachers in the preparation of their sermons. We seek your help by filling out an online survey for Hispanic pastors and preachers, whether you preach in Spanish or English, or both. Your answers will help in the development of the homiletical resource. Fill out the survey here.

Worship Planning Opportunity

Marcia McFee, who leads Worship Design Studio, is offering our region (and other similar church ministries) a chance to purchase registration for all of our congregations to three upcoming planning retreats in August, January 2025, and May 2025. These would offer themes for 1) Advent/Christmas/Epiphany, 2) Lent/Holy Week/Easter, and 3) Ordinary time in the summer. If interested, please let Josh Patty know.
