March 29, 2026 worship service

This week...

Join the Merry Weeders TOMORROW from 5:00-6:30 pm, or on Saturday, April 4, 9:00-10:30 am. Our first work parties of the season are to spruce up the grounds for Easter! We pull some weeds and do some pruning to keep our campus looking great. Volunteers can help for one to two hours, whatever works for you! Priorities will be pruning or removing dead shrubbery, along with pulling dandelions and other weeds. Volunteers should bring pruners, clippers, gloves, a weeder and a bag or bucket or tarp. For more information or to sign up, contact Suzy Fisher at 860-416-9484 or suzy.o.fisher@gmail.com.

2026 Easter offering...

Each year, compelled by our Easter faith, we share our love and God’s both near and far. Our gifts will be divided between the ecumenical development and relief program, One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS), and a $2,500 donation to St. Vincent de Paul in Middletown (SVDM).

When OGHS dollars are allocated to the United Church of Christ’s Wider Church Ministries, we immediately respond to a variety of global and local concerns by providing advocacy, sustainable development resources, short and long-term disaster recovery support and assistance for refugee and asylum seekers.

SVDM exists to meet needs and offer hope by providing food, clothing, shelter and basic human services to community members who experience food, income and housing insecurity. In 2024, SVDM served 81,000 meals, provided fresh food to 1,000 low-income families and supplied weekend meals to 640 children. We have the privilege of serving at SVDM several times a year.

As Easter people, let us continue to be the church and serve with love by giving generously to our Easter offering. You can give online or write a check made out to "First Church" with "Easter Offering" in the memo line.

Next week and more...

All are welcome at our Prayer and Share group meetings on Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m. in the Quiet Room as we come together to connect, to pray and to uplift each other. You are also invited to place prayer requests in our prayer request boxes in the back lobby and the Narthex. For more information, please contact Sandee Brown at seapearl44@gmail.com.

Join us for Faith + Friends Playgroup on Wednesday, April 8, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. for a time of connection, play and grace! Our biweekly playgroup for children and their families meets on the playground. Contact Kelsey Beach for more information at kelsey@glastonburyfirst.org.

Wear your pajamas to church on Sunday, April 12, and make a donation ($5/person, $25/family max) to support the Church School Mission Project with Journey Home's A Hand Up furniture program.

Learn with us at our next Micah Moment: What Defines a Native Plant, Anyway? on Sunday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the Micah Chapel! As he leads you on a virtual tour of native gardens he has designed and installed in the Hartford area, Master Gardener Ted Johnson will share information on using natives, hybrids and cultivars in your home garden. Music scholarship applications are available online for student musicians in the First Church family and in the Glastonbury, East Hartford and Manchester community and are due by May 1. First Church is pleased to offer music scholarships of up to $1,500 to defray the cost of private lessons. The selection process will focus on an applicant’s interest in classical and contemporary music, especially music appropriate for sacred settings. Please contact Deanna Tiffin, Music Scholarship Committee Chair, with questions at deetiffin52@gmail.com.

Ongoing Collections...

First Church is invited to support a book collection organized by O'Brien Elementary School (our Micah Children's Initiative partner school) librarian Anita Agyemang, who coordinates an annual book drive for school-aged children in Ghana. You can see from the picture how excited the children are to receive their literary treasures! This year Mrs. Agyemang will send books to children living in Ghana and Jamaica. If you are interested in donating gently used children’s books for this literacy initiative, you can drop them off in the back lobby in the container labeled Book Donations for Ghana and Jamaica by April 9. Thank you in advance from the Micah Children’s Initiative Team! If you have questions, please contact Jen Anglim at anglimjennifer@yahoo.com.

For our April food collection, we’re asking for donations for the Horace Bushnell Children's Food Pantry, including instant potatoes, pasta and sauce, peanut butter and jelly and other items. Donation baskets are in the back lobby, the Narthex and Micah Chapel. If you have questions, please contact Susan Lambert at sjlambert22@gmail.com.

Carol’s Closet paper pantry serves those who are struggling, and supplies are needed – especially toilet paper (four-packs or individually wrapped rolls), paper towels (individually wrapped rolls), tissues, bar soap (individually wrapped or two-pack) and shampoo (standard size). Please place items in the Carol’s Closet box in the back lobby of the church. Contact Judi Barber with questions at jjbarber0623@gmail.com or 860-836-5374.

Church photo directory update...

We’re excited to begin creating a new church photo directory so we can put names with faces and grow more connected as a community. Over the coming months, we are inviting everyone to have their photo taken or to submit a favorite picture for inclusion.

Sending your own photo:

If you would like to send in your own photo, please send a landscape-oriented (horizontal), already cropped photo to church member Lisa Charles at fccphotodirectory@gmail.com by May 31. We ask that you send only one photo per family.

Having your photo taken:

If you would like to have your photo taken, church member Rich Baber will be in Schultz Hall after the 10:00 a.m. service to do so on the following Sundays: April 12 + May 17.

If you are not able to leave home and need a photo taken, please contact Rich at richbaber@yahoo.com or 860-881-0063 to make an appointment for him to stop by and take one for you.

If you have questions about this process, please contact Nicole Struth at nicole@glastonburyfirst.org.

Office updates...

Please be alert for email and text scams: Our pastors and staff would never reach out to you via email or text to ask for help buying gift cards or send you other requests for personal assistance.
