Worship this Sunday

Join us for worship this Sunday, November 10th which will be the first Sunday following the Presidential Election. Whatever this week may bring or has brought, let us remember that we put our faith in God above all else. Some aspects of worship will be more flexible than most Sundays to allow for God’s Spirit to move in our midst as we recognize how straining this election season has been. Come to worship and find a place where you can rest in God’s presence.

If you have not had a chance to turn in your pledge card for this year, please do so as soon as you can. If you do not think you’ll be at church any time soon, you may email your name and pledge to the church office.

Watch the service live on our Facebook page at 10:30 a.m.

Advent Book Study

Tuesday night Zoom and Sunday school

For the season of Advent we will read through Walter Brueggemann’s book Names for the Messiah on either a Zoom call with Pastor Matthew on Tuesday nights at 6:00 p.m. or in the Adult Sunday school class that meets in the parlor at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Books can be purchased from the sanctuary or the office for $15. A description of the book is provided below.

In Isaiah 9:6, a divine utterance is given to us using four royal titles- Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Names for the Messiah ponders each royal designation and how the people understood it then, how Jesus did or did not fulfill the title, and how Christians interpret Jesus as representative of that title.

Christians have claimed from the beginning that Jesus was the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament. In this study, best-selling author Walter Brueggemann tackles the questions:

"What were these expectations?" and "Did Jesus fulfill them?"

Prayers, Concerns and Joys

Please pray for our members, families, and friends.

We lift-up prayers for those among our community who are shut in. Be with them as they are separated in body from their loved ones.

Diane Hicks’ Nephew - Prayers for Diane’s nephew, Michael, who recently had by-pass surgery in Asheville recently and it was a successful surgery and he is recovering well.

Reese and Eleanor Wills - Prayers for the Wills family following the passing of their son-in-law’s father. May their family be comforted during this time.

Homeless - Let us pray for those who do not have a safe space to stay on any given night. As cold weather approaches, let us pray for those who are forced by life’s circumstances to sleep outside or wherever they can find.

Hurricane Helene damage - Prayers for all the communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. Our presbytery is organizing ways to help and donate and announcements will be made in the Highland Happening and on our social media as we get them.

Our country - As we get closer to Election Day, please make sure you have a plan to vote and keep our country in your prayers as we prepare for what is likely to be a contentious election night and following days.

Ukraine - Let us continue to keep the people of Ukraine in our prayers as the war there continues on well past two years.
