Wrapping Up Summer 2024

September 9, 2024

Hello, Stony Lakers!

As another memorable summer draws to a close, we certainly did our best in the last few weeks of August to end it on a high note.

Our Annual Dinner Dance took place on August 17, and it was amazing to see so many of you on Juniper laughing, chatting, feasting and dancing. Thank you to Jackie and David Hubbs for being the driving force behind this event — and for the many hours of hard work that goes into making it run seamlessly. Thanks also to the many volunteers who helped prep food, set up, serve and clean up afterward. It truly takes a village to create this kind of memorable evening.

One of the highlights of the Dinner Dance was the presentation of the John Fisher Award to Cath and Scott Wootton.

The award is given from time to time to a deserving individual(s) for their exceptional volunteerism and giving back to the SLYC community.

Cath served on our Board as Membership Director for seven years, managing improvements to our systems and hiring exceptional staff. Scott served for 10 years, including five years as Property Director, three as Commodore and two as Past Commodore. Together, through their company Kawartha Lakes Construction, they donated countless materials and labour to the betterment of SLYC and Juniper Island, including construction of the pickleball court.

The SLYC Annual General Meeting was held earlier in the day at the Clubhouse. The room was full and several participants joined via Zoom. Among other important business and valuable discussions, the membership voted to update our By-laws and approve our 2024/25 Board of Directors. Congratulations and thank you to our new Commodore, Beckie Bart, who introduced the new Board before dinner:

  • ASLC Liaison - Kelly Kennedy
  • Commodore - Beckie Bart
  • Communications - Sarah Gallienne (new to the Board!)
  • Membership & Operations - Andrew Parker
  • Member at Large (Data) - Amy Jacobs

  • Past Commodore - Greg Plant

  • Junior Sailing - Dave Anderson
  • Secretary - Erin Binnie (new to the Board!)
  • Tennis & Pickleball - Alex Brooks-Hill and Jody Scotchmer
  • Treasurer - Kelly Wells (new to the Board!)
  • Past Treasurer (non-voting) - Michele Macpherson

For those who missed the AGM, I encourage you to read the Directors reports and minutes, which include recognition for the accomplishments of our many volunteers and staff for their work on the Golf Tournament Fundraiser, Weekend Racing, Junior Sailing, Race Team and off-lake regattas, Tennis, Pickleball, Property, Membership & Operations, ASLC Liaison, Communications, Strategic Planning & Fundraising, Social, Treasury, Audit Committee, Nominating Committee, Safe Sport Policy and ONCA compliance. You can find the reports and minutes here: https://www.slyc.ca/2024-agm

It’s been an honour to have served as your Commodore for the past two years, and I look forward to my new role as Past Commodore. Special thanks to our outgoing Directors, who each have made outstanding contributions to our club: David Newton, Past Commodore; Jackie Hubbs, Social; John (JC) Craig, Communications; Dave Bart, Fundraising; Tom Pitfield, Operations; and Jason Colbert, Property.

I’ve said this many times, but nothing happens at SLYC without the support of our members and a ton of hard work from many unsung heroes behind the scenes. And we always need help! I encourage you to reach out to me or Beckie or any of our Board members to find out how you can become more involved in the summer(s) ahead!

Warmly,

Greg Plant

Past Commodore
