Our Annual Family Letter

Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) wishes you and yours a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy New Year!

It’s that time of year when your mailbox is full of letters from family and friends updating you on what’s been going on the past year, including photos of kids, pets, vacations, and more.

We thought we’d join in the tradition and share our annual letter about what’s happening with the DRTx family. We have so many stories we could share – here are just a few:

Solomon with his mom, dad and service dog.

When people contact us, sometimes they need our assistance more than once. Solomon is one of those clients. When he was 4 years old, his mom called DRTx for help when insurance denied approval of critical in-home medical equipment he needed. DRTx helped get the denial overturned.

A few years later, Solomon’s mom contacted us again because private duty nursing hours that were once approved were denied. DRTx was able to assist in getting those vital nursing hours reinstated so Solomon could receive the care he needed.

Angelica and her twins

Angelica, who has disabilities, was living on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex when she found out that she was pregnant with twins. Her doctor told her that her pregnancy was high risk and climbing the stairs could put her in danger.

When her apartment management said she would have to pay a large early termination fee, she called DRTx, who assisted her with submitting a reasonable accommodation to the complex. Management agreed to waive $2,000 in fees and allowed a payment plan for other costs.

“I am extremely appreciative for the assistance DRTx was able to provide during a stressful time,” said Angelica.

Kathleen smiling

Kathleen was in an assisted living facility for many years when her family realized that, as they were aging, they needed to ensure Kathleen had the future support she needed.

They reached out to DRTx for help and learned how a supported decision-making agreement would allow Kathleen to make her own choices about her life and keep her from being placed under an unnecessary guardianship that would strip her of her rights.

"I was so pleased to learn from DRTx about this option," said Doris, Kathleen's sister-in-law. "They took us through all the steps needed to set up the agreement. We are forever grateful to them."
