Tropical Storm Helene has formed and is forecast to strengthen into a large, major hurricane before it strikes Florida's Gulf Coast Thursday night.
Helene is expected to intensify in the eastern Gulf, possibly rapidly and make landfall. High surf and outer rain bands are expected to reach parts of Florida's Gulf Coast from the Keys to the Panhandle. The storm will then sweep quickly northward through the southeast toward the southern Appalachians.
Helene became the eighth storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season late Tuesday morning while it was centered less than 200 miles east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.
