Crime Scene to Manuscript: Mastering Police Procedurals*

Learn police procedural writing from a retired officer and author. Retired police officer and crime fiction author Frank Scalise discusses the many considerations—and incorrect stereotypes—involved when writing a police procedural. Topics include the structure of a police department, roles within it, the inner workings of a department, procedural elements of an investigation, terminology, and most of all, the best resources you need to get the details right.

Formal constraints spark creativity by challenging habitual ways of writing. Formal constraints can help us shake off our usual writing habits, nudge our writing in a new direction, or find language for what seems unspeakable. We’ll examine and experiment with several playful forms—such as lipograms and bout rimés—to discover what happens when we write our way through tricky restrictions.

Open to all writers, readers, poets, storytellers, and songwriters. Readers are encouraged to arrive early to sign up. Food and drink are available for purchase through the SCP Redmond Hotel.
