WriteAway Update
Spring 2014

WriteAway celebrates its one-year anniversary, and more!

Much has been accomplished since our last Update: WriteAway celebrated its first anniversary (read more at: http://bccampus.ca/2014/02/25/over-500-students-supported-during-writeaways-first-year/), opened for two successful terms, and recently invited institutions around the province to participate in this groundbreaking service. Actions and achievements.

Each year WriteAway publishes its Actions & Achievements report, which outlines accomplishments of the previous year and speaks to the value that WriteAway brings to the BC post-secondary sector. Some highlights from the 2013 report include:

  • Hundreds of students received writing assistance from tutors during the 2013 pilot year. Student feedback has been highly positive; 106 post-usage surveys were received with an average helpfulness rating of 3.66 out of a top score of 4.
  • The WriteAway Advisory Committee has now been established; this group provides oversight for WriteAway policy, planning, and operations, and reports to the BC eTutoring Concept Committee.
  • A BC Math/Statistics Exploratory Group has also been created; this group is investigating how Math/Statistics support could be offered within the BC eTutoring framework.

Springing into WriteAway... service updates.

Since the Fall 2013 Update, WriteAway has held two very successful terms - Fall 2013 (Sept. 16 to Dec. 6) and Spring 2014 (Jan. 20 to Apr. 11) - with six institutions: Camosun College, College of the Rockies, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University, and the University of British Columbia. Student submissions kept WriteAway tutors busy through both terms; tutors responded to almost 1,600 writing submissions! Approximately 57% of these submissions were made by students who self-identified as English as an Additional Language learners.

The WriteAway Summer 2014 term will run from June 30th until August 8th.
Join a growing collaborative.

WriteAway is now ready to welcome new institutions to join the service for September 2014. Joining WriteAway is a great way to expand your institution's on-site writing services, participate in an emerging area of student academic support, provide access for distance learners, and much more. A list of requirements for participating institutions is available at: http://writeaway.ca/requirements.php

A number of institutions have shown interest in joining the service - be on the lookout for an announcement soon about new joiners! If you have questions about how your institution can become a part of this growing collaborative, please contact Leah Hopton at the WriteAway Administrative Centre: waoffice@eln.bc.ca/778.782.9573.
