Students Love Reading--and Writing--Graphic Novels!
Elementary school librarians and teachers agree: Students love graphic novels!

Staff Developers Alison Porcelli and Catherine Graybosch recently attended a class at Teachers College on harnessing that enthusiasm in a writing workshop. They shared what they learned with fourth grade teachers across the district. Many students, including Jocelyn Lividini's class at Increase Miller, are excited to start writing stories comic-book style!
Writers Workshop at Katonah Elementary Is Full of Surprises
Picture yourself in the press box at Yankee Stadium! Ask a guest twenty questions to discover his career. Imagine you are in a grocery store and . . . what if . . . ?

These are just some of the prompts that got fourth and fifth graders writing on May 30. They were participating in Do the WRITE Thing, a workshop created by the Katonah Elementary PTO and led by professional writers from the community.

Meadow Pond Second Graders Salute the States in Song
“Our first song will be 'America, the Beautiful,'” a second grader read confidently, opening Salute to the States in Meadow Pond Elementary's auditorium.

The family concert celebrated the completion of a unit connecting music and social studies. Students learned songs highlighting the United States as they studied the communities of our country.

Sixth Graders Share "This I Believe" Statements
I believe that all people are good.
I believe that hard work pays off.
I believe in the power of yet.

These personal statements, displayed on posters, line the hallway leading to the middle school cafeteria. They reflect Team Exuberant's year-long study of character traits. Each poster includes a QR code taking you to a student reading his or her full “This I Believe” essay.

Science Research Sophomores Show at Somers Science Fair
Congrats to the seven students who brought home awards at the Somers Science Fair on June 1--and to all fourteen Science Research sophomores who participated!

The competition is exclusively for tenth graders enrolled in the rigorous three-year Science Research program. It offers students 21st century information literacy skills and authentic lab-based experiences.

Awards Season at John Jay High School
" Our students are congratulated for their success by using all of their talents, persevering through challenges, and giving back to the community so selflessly," said Dr. Steven Siciliano, principal of John Jay High School.
