Q) What can I do to gain the skills necessary to successfully coach triathletes if I don't know much about the sport?
A) My philosophy is to train all triathletes to be swimmers. This builds their confidence, swimming endurance, and efficiency. Proper training should also reduce the risk of injury to the athlete. You should also become knowledgeable in the following areas to effectively coach a triathlete competing in the open water:
- Race strategy: start, pace, finish
- Skills: sighting, buoy turns, drafting
- Stroke technique: breathing, timing, propulsion, efficiency
- Energy systems
- Purpose of interval training
