Wyman's Field Notes from iGaming Next
Last week, TIG Partner and SVP Brian Wyman attended iGaming Next NYC and recently posted an article to LinkedIn sharing three major themes he took away from the content and conversations there. We’ve included an excerpt below, but check out the full article – including his final theme of “Product, Product, Product” – here.
I was privileged to attend the iGaming Next conference last week in New York. If you’ve never been, it’s a very nice event and truly a global meeting-of-the-minds regarding iGaming. Kudos to their team! For those unable to attend, three key themes stood out to me (and, if you were there, I’d love to hear your thoughts…):
-
The space is ripe for M&A. The early mania around sports betting and all things digital combined with a great environment for raising capital enabled many brands to launch all across the interactive space. Now, in a considerably more challenging market to raise – and with investors tapping their feet even at DraftKings asking when profitability is coming – some smaller companies are facing strong headwinds. Even for larger companies, thin margins and a fragmented market suggest consolidation may be inevitable.
-
Everyone is waiting for iCasino. For the last several years, U.S. conference content has been dominated by the topic of emerging markets for sports betting. Notwithstanding that some eyes (including mine) are focused on Minnesota and Kentucky sports bills, recent sentiment has been that sports betting is yesterday’s news. The industry now is waiting for the online casino dominoes to fall. And who can blame them? With enormous margins bolstered by as-yet reasonable tax rates, coupled with a huge opportunity to link land-based casinos for a truly omnichannel experience, this is a golden goose for gaming. The problem? State legislatures are less enthusiastic about the idea, meaning a slow trickle of states coming online is more likely than the race we saw to legalize sports betting. So, instead of twiddling their collective thumbs, the industry has been focused on my third theme…

TIG for Gaming America | iGaming in Canada: What’s Next?
In April 2022, the Canadian gaming landscape changed dramatically with the opening of the Ontario iGaming market to private gaming operators. Aside from Ontario, all other Canadian provinces use their government-owned lottery and gaming corporations as the exclusive legal provider of iGaming. For the latest issue of Gaming America, our own Kevin Dennis, SVP, Canada, sat down with his colleague Troy Ross, President of TRM Public Affairs, to get his take on the opening of iGaming in Ontario and what’s next across Canada.
