NOVEMBER MONTHLY PROGRAM

Wild Philly: the Extraordinary Nature of Our Backyard

Mike Weilbacher

Friday, November 17, 2023, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

America’s sixth largest city is home to an amazing abundance of surprising wildlife: the peregrine falcon, the fastest animal on earth; the coyote, a recent immigrant to Wild Philly; the beaver, once vanished and now making an astonishing comeback; and more. In an illustrated lecture presented by naturalist Mike Weilbacher, author of the new book Wild Philly, you’ll meet some of the region’s featured creatures plus the best places to walk to meet the full diversity of Philadelphia wildlife. Mike shares the natural, cultural, and even geological history of the region, presents a new vision for how the Lenape lived on the land, and even addresses climate change, our most pressing issue. In addition, he’ll answer your questions about nature in the region. It’s the perfect companion to Mike’s book, which will be sold after the lecture-- and makes a great holiday present for your family’s nature lovers.

Writer-naturalist Mike Weilbacher is an environmental educator with 40 years of experience teaching through lectures, walks, newspaper essays, theatrical performances, and radio. Timber Press has released his first book, Wild Philly. It features 29 nature walks you and your family can take in the region, plus tons of additional information about nature and the environment.

ADVOCACY MINUTE!

The Friends of Heinz Refuge (FOHR) are requesting the support of the many individuals, organizations, and friends who visit the refuge and enjoy the birds, wildlife and the varied habitats to which the refuge is a home.

They are proposing that a 125-acre parcel of city owned land in the Eastwick section of Philadelphia be sold or transferred to the Refuge. This property would be used to foster the development of additional wetlands as a natural means to help minimize the threats of flooding in Eastwick. The Army Corps of Engineers has proposed building a levee to “control” flood threats. Many of environmental partners understand that engineered solutions, like levees, cannot achieve the same ongoing natural solutions provided by the functions of wetlands.
