A National Audubon Jewel off the Coast of Maine!

Join Wyncote Audubon at our October Monthly Program scheduled for 7:00 PM on Friday, October 20, 2023 at the Upper Dublin Public Library, 520 Virginia Drive, Fort Washington, PA 19034. The presentation will feature Holly Merker, a long time instructional leader at the Hog Island Camp. Holly will share a profile of the programs and people at Hog Island and how it continues to flourish as it continues its eighty-year legacy. Residential sessions at Hog Island have been led by some of the most respected naturalists and environmental educators in the nation as it continues to inspire scores of scientists, school and university educators, and conservation leaders. Wyncote Audubon has provided “Griscom Scholarships” to the camp for many decades. Recent Wyncote Audubon Griscom Scholars, Olivia Cochran and Jennifer Tanay, will follow Holly’s presentation to share the value of their experiences at Hog Island to their work. We will also provide information of how educators and youth can apply for scholarships to attend the 2024 sessions.

Holly Merker is a well known to Wyncote Audubon as a presenter at past meetings. She has presented past programs on “How to Use eBird” and just last year on her book Ornitherapy. She most recently joined Scott Weidensaul to help lead the fall migration session for the Hog Island Audubon Camp.

We look forward to returning to the large banquet hall at the North Hills Country Club for this annual event. This will be an opportunity for our members and friends to gather and celebrate our work and accomplishments. Dr. Joseph M. Wunderle, former President of Bird Caribbean, will present a program on Caribbean Bird Conservation and the challenges to protection. Dr. John Kricher will join us to present our John Dornan Conservation Award to Dr. Wunderle in recognition of his career as an ornithologist and conservation leadership!

FIELD TRIPS

MILITIA HILL HAWK WATCH

Fort Washington State Park, Fort Washington, PA

Militia Hill Hawk Watch continues in its 36^th year to monitor the migration of hawks that pass over Fort Washington State Park. Volunteer compilers are on duty daily to collect data as part of the Hawk Migration Association of North America through November 15th.

BIRD TOWN PENNSYLVANIA BIRDWALKS

All are welcome to participate, including new birders and experienced birders alike. Bring binoculars if you have them; wear comfortable footwear and clothing. Come see some of the fall migrants that Continue to pass through our area. There also is a chance to see some of our early returning winter resident bird species. No preregistration is required.

ABINGTON BIRD TOWN BIRD WALK

Lorimer Park

Join Jennifer Sherwood, for this monthly bird walk at Lorimer Park. We will walk portions of the Pennypack Trail and trails in Lorimer Park, an official Audubon IBA (Important Bird Area). These walks are being sponsored by the Abington Bird Town, and the Abington Environmental Advisory Council, and supported by the Wyncote Audubon Society. Directions: Meet at the Pennypack Trail Welsh Road Parking Lot, located at 800 Welsh Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.

CHELTENHAM BIRD TOWN BIRD WALK

High School Park

Join Judith Gratz for this monthly bird walk to explore some of the birding opportunities in Cheltenham Bird Town. The Cheltenham Bird Town, Tookany/Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership, Friends of High School Park, and the Wyncote Audubon Society support these bird walks. Directions: Meet at High School Park located at Montgomery Avenue and High School Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027.

UPPER DUBLIN BIRD TOWN BIRD WALK

Robbins Park

Join Nilesh Shah to search for birds at Robbins Park, These walks are being sponsored by the Upper Dublin Bird Town, Upper Dublin Parks and Recreation, and supported by the Wyncote Audubon Society and DVOC. Directions: Meet in the parking at 1419 East Butler Pike, Ambler, PA 19002.

LOWER GWYNEDD BIRD TOWN BIRD WALK

Wednesday, October 18, 2023 8:30 am – 10:30am

Gwynedd Preserve (Upper Gwynedd)

Join Steven Saffier, Lower Gwynedd EAC member on a walk exploring Natural Lands’ amazing nature preserve that contains woodlands, meadows, pond and edge habitat. Nearly 200 species of birds have been recorded in this conservation area and other wildlife abound! We will stick to designated trails but tick and mud protection are still highly recommended. Meet at the parking lot 640 Swedesford Road in North Wales. Please RSVP to contactus@lowergwynedd.org

There are many community events in October at which Wyncote Audubon will participate with our tabling information and displays. These events are sponsored by partner organizations and are not Wyncote Audubon events but we are proud to be there. Wyncote Audubon is pleased to participate with our displays as well as those that promote Bird Safe Philly and Bird Town.
