SEPTEMBER MONTHLY PROGRAM
“LOOKING FORWARD TO PENNSYLVANIA’S 3RD BREEDING BIRD ATLAS ”
Amber Wiewel, Pennsylvania Bird Atlas Coordinator
7:00 PM, Friday, September 22, 2023
Pennsylvania’s Breeding Bird Atlas is a 5-year long community science project conducted every 20 years to improve understanding of the distribution and abundance of breeding and wintering birds across the state. Pennsylvania’s 3rd atlas begins January 1, 2024 and will run through winter 2028-29. This presentation will be an overview of the need for atlases, how the 3rd atlas will differ from previous atlases, and how birders of all skill levels can participate! Amber Wiewel, the Coordinator for the Pennsylvania’s Bird Atlas, will present this program. Amber will explain the role and the work of atlas volunteers as part of the Atlas Project. Pennsylvania Audubon chapters and their members have been instrumental in the success of the first two atlas projects and will be important to the work of this 3rd atlas!
This is Wyncote Audubon’s regular September monthly program. All Wyncote programs are “hybrid” in nature. We encourage “In-Person” participation at the Upper Dublin Public Library, Virginia Drive, Fort Washington, PA 19034. We have invited participants from our sister chapters from the Pennsylvania Audubon Council to participate in this program. Registration via Eventbrite is required in order to participate via ZOOM. The ZOOM link is sent to registrants on the day of the presentation.

FIELD TRIPS
Chimney Swift Watch
7:15 PM, Wednesday, September 6, 2023
Watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost is quite the spectacle! They spend a lot of time swirling around in the air before dropping into their roost site. Bring a chair and binoculars and join us in the parking lot of the Bryn Athyn College, Junge Ice Rink & Pavilion, 3002 Cairnwood Drive, Bryn Athyn, PA 19009 to watch swifts descend into a nearby chimney for the night. Because swifts change their roosting spot, it is not guaranteed to see them the night we are watching. You can learn more about Chimney Swifts during our Chimney Swift 101 program on the PERT YouTube page. This is a joint presentation of the Wyncote Audubon Society, and the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust. This is a free event but pre-registration is required. Learn more and register at the PERT website: www.pennypacktrust.org

“LIGHTS OUT” AND BIRD SAFE PHILLY
RESUMES FOR THE FALL MIGRATION!
The work and activities of Bird Safe Philly have resumed in earnest with the fall migration. The participating buildings in center city buildings go “dark” from midnight to 6:00 AM from August 15th to November 15th. Widespread concern was raised after the October 2, 2020 massive bird kill was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer. It was determined that the incident was due to a combination of weather conditions and the brightly lit city buildings. The Bird Safe Philly initiative was initiated and the “Lights Out” program resulted.
Volunteers who can assist one day a week are welcome and will receive training from one of our lead monitors. Volunteer monitors walk specific routes of several blocks in the city between 5:30 AM and 8:00 AM to determine how many birds and which species were colliding with buildings and glass throughout the spring migration. The monitors record data for each bird collected. Dead birds are taken to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University where they are kept for research. Injured birds were transported to the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic.
Support for the Clinic and for supplies for the monitors were realized with funds raised through the Wyncote Audubon Society Birdathon. Additional support will be forthcoming for the fall corps of volunteers. Special thanks are due to everyone who contributed to our Birdathon. A few additional volunteers are needed with injured bird transport to the SCEE Clinic. Learn more about the program and volunteering at www.birdsafephilly.org
