NEWS FROM WYOMING SOCCER ASSOCIATON...
2020 Academic Scholarship Winners Announced
Wyoming Soccer Association is proud to announce the recipients of the 2020 Academic Scholarship. Each recipient received a $500 academic scholarship paid to the college where they are enrolled.

We had a lot of applications come in and with COVID-19, it took some time for the scholarship committee, lead by Annie Graham of Casper, to determine the winners, as all were highly qualified and deserving. But, they were able to narrow it down to the following three.
Alyssa Bedard of Rock Springs

Alyssa plans on continuing her education at the University of Wyoming in the Kinesiology and Health Promotions program this Fall for a Bachelor of Science degree and pursue her Master’s. Her career plan is to become an Exercise Physiologist. She has compassion for other people and a genuine desire to help improve the quality of people’s lives.

Alyssa has signed with the University of Wyoming Cowgirls Soccer team.

Her soccer profile includes the following:

  • She was a three-year letterwinner while attending Rock Springs High School
  • Named All-State and All-Conference three years in a row
  • Selected as a 2020 Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year nominee, while being nominated twice previously
  • Led the state of Wyoming in scoring three seasons and helped lead her team to three-straight Regional Championships
  • Was part of the ODP West Regional Player pool and helped her club team to a third place finish at the US Club Soccer Nationals

Besides soccer, she lettered in track and field, was named All-State twice and a four-time State Champion in Indoor track and field. Alyssa is an excellent student and was a member of the National Honor Society, Honor Roll and was her Class Vice President.
Nathan Hawley of Casper

Nathan is attending Casper College to pursue a profession as an Electrician. After he graduates, Nathan plans to work through the IBEW Apprentice and Journeyman programs. He will play for Casper College in their inaugural 2020 season and made history as the first player to sign on as a Thunderbird Soccer player this past year! He will continue to give back to Wyoming Soccer as a referee. He was Wyoming Soccer's 2019 Young Referee of the Year!

Nathan started playing soccer at the age of 9 for the Casper Blades. He has had playing experience at every position (including Keeper when he was younger) and this has helped him to develop good tactical understanding of the game, and the ability to step into any system of play and quickly get up to speed on expectations and responsibilities. He will be a great asset to the Thunderbirds!

Off the pitch, Nathan is an avid rock climber, and enjoys a host of outdoor activities. He enjoys camping, skiing (alpine), snow showing, mountain biking and kayaking, to name just a few. Nathan is an Eagle Scout, and has experienced challenges as both a member of a team, and that team's leader. The lessons he learned in scouting about overcoming adversity and adapting to ever changing situations and interpersonal dynamics have allowed him thus far to be both a good teammate, and an on field leader.
Ethan Mathis of Cheyenne

Ethan is studying Exercise Science at Laramie County Community College because of his passion for sports. He wants to find ways to improve athletic performance and ability. Ethan was a part of the TOPSoccer program in Cheyenne and was dedicated to helping young athletes with disabilities enjoy the game of soccer.

Ethan's Soccer Profile includes the following:

  • 4 year letter-winner
  • 2x State Runner-up
  • 2019 All-Conference
  • 2019 All-State
  • 2019 Gatorade Player of the Year Nominee
  • Holds Cheyenne Central HS record for most goals in a game by a single player.

Ethan was very involved in his highschool (Central) and was a member of the Interact Club - a Rotary service club for youth ages 12-18. He also helped orgranize food and blood drives for his school. Ethan is a dedicated athlete and wishes to devote his life to athletes. He feels soccer has helped him in many areas of his life, as far as developing character, leadership skills and creating lifelong relationships.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALYSSA, NATHAN & ETHAN!
