One of the highlights recently added to the Summer Featured Auction preview is the one and only original art cover to one of the most important comic books of the Modern Era -- Uncanny X-Men
#266 introducing Gambit, and drawn by superstar artist Andy Kubert! Kubert did an amazing job on this art, filling it with powerful details and quickly establishing Gambit's unique look that resonated so well with X-men fans. It's clear from Gambit's appearance in the upper left corner box, that the character was meant to be a star from the moment he was introduced. The plan worked and Uncanny X-Men
#266 became one of the key comic books of the 1990's. It will likely continue to grow in historical importance as the long-planned Gambit
movie franchise starring Channing Tatum finally gets off the ground.
Following the appearance of the offered cover on newsstands and comic book stores across the world, Gambit quickly became a highly popular member of the number one comic book franchise of the late 20th century. Gambit's long-term romance with Rogue was one of the most beloved by fans in the history of comic book couples. He's had several mini-series and on-going series over the decades. His role on the popular X-Men
animated series of the early 1990's exposed him to millions of young fans. Gambit made his movie premiere in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine
, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. As mentioned, Channing Tatum is on board to portray Gambit in an upcoming solo film, which when it happens, will greatly raise the profile of the character. The film has experienced some delays, but the producer confirmed in January of 2017 that it is still going to happen with Tatum still attached to the role. Keep in mind that the Deadpool
movie saw similar delays, but when it finally came out, it was one of the biggest films of the year.
This cover also features Storm, AKA Ororo, who appears as a child due to a story development. Storm first appeared in the seminal Giant-size X-Men
#1 in 1975 that introduced the second generation of X-Men that ruled the comic book world in the 1980's and 1990's. Storm has been a key leader of the X-Men for decades and for a time was married to the Black Panther. The character has appeared in four X-Men movies to date and will be appearing in future ones as well.
The X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in X-Men
#1 (1963). The original title ended in 1970, but a few years into a 1975 revival, artist John Byrne and writer Chris Claremont turned the team into the biggest franchise in comic book history, a reign that continued for two decades. The X-Men became household names with the launch of the first X-Men
movie in 2000. Now, with nine films behind them and many more to come, the X-Men remain a powerful force on the pop culture landscape.
About the Artist:
After training with his father, the legendary artist and art instructor, Joe Kubert, artist Andy Kubert went on to become a major artist for Marvel in the 1990's, taking over X-Men
after Jim Lee's departure for Image. Kubert drew X-Men related titles for several years, helping to keep it the #1 franchise in the industry. Since 2005, Kubert has worked primarily for DC on high profile Batman-related projects. His initial work was the storyline written by Grant Morrison that introduced Batman's popular son, Damian Wayne, now the current Robin. For the last couple of years, Kubert has been one of the artists on the high profile sequel to Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
, entitled The Dark Knight III: The Master Race
.
