We were recently honored to work with Grant Beacon Middle School during their first quarter enrichment classes. Below are a few

excerpts from the book we published for the youth participants. You can read it online @ http://tinyurl.com/q2bacys or simply click on the book cover.

"I am the sage burning

in my blood.

I ascend with smoke

that shows my ancestors

dancing around.

I give strength and happiness

to my Native people."

"I see the big players

and the opposing teams

made up of drugs,

bullying,

and stereotypes.

They are all in my way to the hoop,

blocking my path to greatness.

I see an opening.

I go through all of them

without them even breathing on me.

I succeed

where everyone has failed.

I am ready to take the shot

but this time I will not miss."

"The smell takes me to another world.

The spices and love that my mom puts in it

make it the most amazing, delicious thing

you will ever taste.

My mom's food is the best.

It will always run in the family.

I will always love my culture

and will never be ashamed."

We continue working with our other partners to allow youth participants opportunities to express themselves and tell their stories. They currently include Mi Casa Neighborhood Center @ Lake, La Academia, Heart & Hand, and STRIVE Prep SMART. We look forward to adding more sites in the near future.

As we noted in our October newsletter, we are excited to make our recent youth-written books available online. To access each collection of powerful spoken word poetry from participants in our workshop series, simply click on the book cover.

Xpress Yourself Basic Spoken Word Workshops for Youth

We have worked with numerous schools and organizations throughout Colorado to give underserved youth an opportunity to express themselvesOur most recent partner have included: Denver East H.S., Denver West H.S., and Vista Peak Preparatory.

If you are interested in having Cafe Cultura present at your school or organization, feel free to contact us. Our basic version is a one time, 1 to 2 hour session. We have used this highly engaging and culturally relevant workshop structure for over eight years to encourage Chicana/o and Native youth to use spoken word to give voice to our stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. They serve to supplement and support Language Arts/English curriculumWorkshop structure was designed by a spoken word artist with 4 years experience teaching at the middle and high school level with contributions from other poets and youth advocates.Click here for a detailed information sheet.

We're extremely excited to share the following promotional video for these workshops (edited by Derek Brown...Chair, Cafe Cultura's Board of Directors).
