Y’s Men Membership News

Saturday, February 22, 2025

Hello, Y’s Men!

This week, we welcome two new members:

David Halpern, a retired institutional architect with 40 years of experience, specializing in science and technology projects as Director at Flad Architects NYC office for 25 years. He serves on Westport’s Architectural Review Board and has long been a Westport Weston YMCA member.

We also welcome Bob King of Westport who taught accounting at several colleges and served in the Maryland National Guard for many years.

A Return to Consumer Reports

As your Membership Chairman, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news!

Many of you may recall the buzz that followed our previous visit to the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center. As someone who joined Y’s Men shortly after that Consumer Reports Auto Test Track tour, I can tell you the enthusiasm from that trip lingered for months. I’m delighted to announce that we have another opportunity on the horizon!

Y’s Men have secured another hard-to-get Consumer Reports Auto facility tour, scheduled for Wednesday, May 28. This will be a great experience, especially for our newer members who missed the last visit.

I’ll be among the first to register for this event, and I encourage all of you, particularly our new members, to do the same. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

Sadly, this week, we learned that longtime member Nick Clarke died in Florida. He was 85 and joined Y’s Men in 2012. The Communications Team will have an update in the regular newsletter and there will be a posting in the In Memoriam section on the Y’s Men website when an obit is published.

New Member Spotlight

This week, Y's Man Clarence Hayes tells us the fascinating story of new member Jerome Zhang. Here is an abbreviated version, but you can find his full bio on the Y's Men website by clicking here.

Jerome Zhang

Jerome Zhang – A Life of Chinese Milestones

Born in Shanghai in 1945, Jerome grew up during a period when the Communist Party was establishing complete control over Chinese society and the economy. Precocious, he completed high school at 15 and earned a Chemical Engineering degree by 20, in 1965, just months before the Cultural Revolution disrupted higher education for the next decade.

Jerome married a fellow Shanghai native and chemical engineer, and the couple was assigned to work at a Chemical Design Institute in Taiyuan, far from their hometown. Their work involved designing and improving chemical plants across China. For more than 13 years, Jerome advanced professionally and began studying English after work—a testament to his persistence, given the lack of resources at the time.

In 1978, under Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, Jerome was selected to join the first class of Visiting Scholars to the U.S., spending two years at MIT. There, he experienced a dramatically different culture of openness and debate while participating in chemical research. As one of the few chemical engineers among the first Visiting Scholars, he successfully negotiated a return to Shanghai for his family.

He was tasked with creating a consulting division for his new company, which he built into a multidisciplinary team of 200 employees in just seven years. He later rose to Senior VP and then to the Board of Directors of Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Company, where he oversaw technology, managed international partnerships, and acquired foreign technologies from Japan, the U.S., and Europe.

In 2010, after retiring at 63, Jerome and his wife moved to Westport to be with their only child. His daughter had earlier studied in the U.S., earned an MBA from Columbia, and settled in Manhattan and Westport.

Now retired, Jerome enjoys cooking, tennis, ping-pong, and Bridge. He looks forward to connecting with new friends and sharing his stories—or his recipes for authentic Chinese cuisine!

We thank these Y’s Men who have referred new members during this fiscal year!
