Y’s Men Membership News

Saturday, January 25, 2025

Hello, Y’s Men.

This week, we welcome new members Daniel Nissim and Rick Honey. Today we share profiles for two other relatively new members, Daniel Roestorf and Sheldon Nova. Also, we remember a former Y’s Men Treasurer who was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Paul Rohan talked with new member Dan Roestorf about among other things, his career at GE.

Daniel Roestorf, a Westport resident since 2012, was born in South Africa. He spent his childhood on a family farm in the Bushveld region. Dan studied computer science and operated his own software business in South Africa until he immigrated to the United States in 1997.

Dan began his career in financial services as a consultant for Price Waterhouse and later served as Chief Information Officer for General Electric Capital in both Europe and the United States until its sale to Wells Fargo. After the sale, Dan continued as Chief Information Officer at Wells Fargo Commercial Finance until his retirement in 2023.

An avid golfer, Dan plays a few times each week and enjoys paddle sports of all kinds. He is married to Claudia Mengel, an artist, and together they have five children who are busy with their careers.

Daniel and Claudia relish international travel in Europe and Africa.

Clarence Hayes interviewed Sheldon Nova, who has impressive numbers:  47 years in medical practice, 55 years of marriage, five grandchildren—and now enjoying retirement.

Introducing New Member Sheldon Nova:

Sheldon Nova

Sheldon grew up in Jersey City during the 1950s, a safe and close-knit working-class community at the time. Ambitious and determined, he decided to become a doctor during his senior year of high school. After earning a BA in Biology and Chemistry from Rutgers, he attended the University of Cincinnati Medical School, graduating in 1967. His surgical internship took him to Albany Medical College and New Jersey College of Medicine.

While interning in New Jersey and living at home, he met a local girl who was also pursuing her studies while living with her family. The two hit it off, married, and moved to New Haven, where Sheldon completed his residency in otolaryngology (ENT) at Yale in 1973.

After residency, Sheldon was drafted into the Army Medical Corps and began his clinical career at a 500-bed hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Once discharged, he moved to West Hartford and started a solo private practice. His practice flourished and he took on partners as it grew. Meanwhile, he and his wife raised three children in West Hartford.

Sheldon continued practicing in the Hartford area until his retirement at age 78 in 2019. In 2021, he relocated to Westport to be closer to two of his children and four of his grandchildren.

Now enjoying retirement, Sheldon pursues his passions for music—classical, opera, and jazz—gardening, and, despite his self-proclaimed lack of skill, golf.

Remembering Former Y’s Men Treasurer Elliot Netherton

Elliot Netherton

Last week, Clarence Hayes highlighted in the Membership Newsletter that Art Levy holds the current distinction of being the Y’s Men’s only Kentucky Colonel—the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky.

That brought back memories for Jay Dirnberger, who says that former Y’s Men Treasurer Elliot Netherton was also a Kentucky Colonel. Netherton had a distinguished career and community involvement. He was a retired General Electric employee and a former United States Army Colonel who served as the Commandant of the 1031st USARF School, according to a WestportNow story.

Netherton was a dedicated volunteer with the Westport Historical Society and was known for his classic dark green Jaguar with Kentucky Colonel (“KY COL”) license plates. He was also deeply committed to the Boy Scouts of America, receiving a Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Award for over 50 years of active service.

Netherton passed away on May 27, 2016, at the age of 82 after battling pulmonary fibrosis. His wife, Joyce Beals Netherton, passed away last September at 86, according to "06880."

We thank these Y’s Men who have referred new members during this fiscal year!
