David Halpern
David grew up in New Rochelle and developed a love for woodworking and sailing while working at a boatyard. At SUNY Stony Brook, he participated in a multidisciplinary learning program, which broadened his perspective. His interest in architecture was sparked by this experience, his woodworking background, and the chance of living in a home designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé. After earning a B.A. in History (1979), he spent a year preparing for architecture school and was accepted into Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a Master’s in Architecture (1983).
After a summer architecture program in Barcelona, he traveled across Europe and, in Copenhagen, met Maj-Britt, a Danish graphic artist. Their paths crossed twice by chance, leading to a long-distance romance and, eventually, marriage.
David launched his career with small firms before joining HOK, where he worked on a Penn Station redesign. He later transitioned to FLAD, where he spent 25 years specializing in scientific research facilities for pharmaceutical, chemical and academic clients. He became the regional director, growing the Northeast office from seven to 40 architects. A highlight of this period was a decade-long collaboration with CUNY, where he led the design of a $1 billion project that added two major research centers to the university system: the Advanced Science and Research Center and the City College Center for Discovery and Innovation. His designs have earned numerous AIA, Lab Design, and Interior Design awards.
A Westport resident since 1990, he and Maj-Britt raised two children who attended local schools. David retired in 2024 to spend more time with his wife and pursue his hobbies—travel, hiking, cycling, skiing, and woodworking. He looks forward to new connections in the Ys Men and getting back on the water.
