Peter Chingos -- From Boardrooms to Regulation:
A Career in Executive Compensation
Born and raised in Queens, Peter Chingos graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1964.
He went on to St. Francis College in Brooklyn to pursue a BA in Psychology. During his second year he was accepted into the US Army Reserves. After completing his military training, he went back to St. Francis College to complete his psychology degree in 1970.
After graduation, still unsure of his career path, Peter took a summer internship at Peat Marwick Mitchell (later KPMG) where the job turned out to be making microfiche copies of Audit work papers. His obsessive microfiche diligence stood out. He was offered a spot in a new KPMG program that recruited liberal arts and science students into accounting roles.
While working in the audit division, he completed a MS degree in Accounting at NYU Stern School of Business in 1972. Soon after, he joined KPMG's Executive Compensation Consulting practice. His background in psychology was a perfect fit for HR consulting. By 1979, he was a partner. At that time he married a girl from his old neighborhood in Queens. In 1993 they moved to Westport where they still reside.
Peter led KPMG's Executive Compensation practice before it was acquired by Mercer in 1998, where he became a Worldwide Partner and Board Member. He played a key role in research on executive pay and advised the SEC and the IRS on regulatory issues. In 2009 he founded Compensation Advisory Partners, running it until his retirement in 2019.
He and his wife continue to travel but they get to choose the destinations! He looks forward to exploring new activities and relationships through the Y's Men and is happy to share his expertise on executive compensation with anyone who's interested. Click here for the full version of this bio.
