Dan Bley
Dan Bley grew up in Highland Park, Illinois, and was a varsity gymnast before heading to the University of Michigan to study economics. At Michigan, he joined the “Acrobatic Squad,” performing stunts at football games, often as the airborne “human cannonball.”
After graduating in 1990, Dan began a 34-year career in banking. He joined LaSalle Bank in Chicago, which led to an international assignment at parent company ABN Amro's headquarters in Amsterdam. That “two-year” stint became eight, including earning an Executive MBA from London Business School while commuting between cities.
Dan returned to New York with ABN Amro in 2002 as Head of Institutional Credit Risk for all U.S. Financial Institution clients. He was on the front lines of the mortgage market buildup and the 2008 financial crisis. After ABN’s breakup shortly before the crash, Dan stayed with the global markets division, acquired by RBS. He stayed with them through 2010, helping to unwind the post-crash mess, After 21 years with one institution, Dan decided to move back to his regional banking routes and, in 2010, he joined Webster Bank as Chief Risk Officer, where he spent the next decade helping the company grow into Connecticut’s largest bank.
Dan met his wife shortly after returning to the U.S. They married in 2005, moved to Westport in 2008, and have three daughters. Now 56, he plans to step down from Webster by year-end and is exploring what comes next. He remains eager to learn, and is looking forward to engaging with the Y's Men to build new relationships and explore ideas about how to navigate this next stage of life with purpose and enjoyment.
