Carl Muller
Carl Muller: From Cold War Intelligence to Global Finance
Born in 1938 and raised in Manhattan, Carl Muller grew up in a cultured family, with an architect father and an educated mother. His early education was unconventional and demanding, culminating in his admission to Yale University as a Ford Foundation Scholar on his 16th birthday. After initially pursuing both Chemistry and Humanities, he graduated in 1959 with a B.A. in Philosophy.
After graduation, Carl volunteered for the U.S. Army and was selected for the Army Security Agency. He spent a year in intensive Russian language training in Monterey before being stationed on the East German border, where he monitored voice communications during the Cold War. While there, he learned German, travelled widely, and met his first wife, Gabriela. After his discharge, Carl joined Chase Manhattan Bank in New York in 1964.
Rising quickly through Chase’s training program, Carl became a lending officer. In 1969, he was chosen to open Chase’s branch in Hamburg, West Germany, growing assets from $8 million to $100 million and achieving over $1 million in profits in the first year. He later was a Credit Officer for Europe and Africa. After a stint in charge of Ship Finance for Europe in London, he became head of Chase’s Corporate New Products Division in New York during the turbulent post–oil embargo years.
In 1977, Carl moved to the corporate side as Treasurer of CBS, then joined Marine Midland Banks in 1984, where he played a key role in strengthening the firm ahead of its eventual acquisition by HSBC. After the acquisition, Carl established a foreign bank consulting firm and retired when he moved to London in 1996.
Carl remarried in 1981, supporting his wife Cynthia’s long career in private wealth management while devoting himself to volunteer leadership in London’s community and cultural life, notably founding Eaton Square Concerts, a London chamber music series, which he managed for 15 years. After decades of absence from Westport, Carl and Cynthia relocated there in 2025, where he looks forward to building new friendships and reconnecting with music and the arts through the Y’s Men.
