Michael Kliegman: Tax Expert and Secret Journalist
Michael Kliegman’s life has been shaped by curiosity, debate, and a lifelong love of writing. Raised in Roslyn, Long Island, he moved through school with a mix of academic focus and eclectic interests—starting the Russian Club, working backstage in theater, and keeping company with the “nerdy kids.” He graduated from Roslyn High in 1972 and then completed his degree in Sociology with a minor in English Literature in three years at the University of Pennsylvania. He later regretted the rush, wishing he’d taken an extra year to enjoy the experience.
Though he flirted with journalism, the family refrain of “you ought to be a lawyer” stuck, and at 20 he headed to Boston University Law School. After earning his JD, he joined a small Washington, D.C., firm handling everything from personal injury cases to pro bono criminal defense. Evening classes at Georgetown unexpectedly sparked a passion for tax law, leading to an LLM and a career pivot he never anticipated.
D.C. also brought him something more lasting—a chance meeting with Sally, an art historian and dancer. They married eight months later and eventually settled in Westport in 1988, where they raised two sons.
Michael spent five years at the IRS before moving into the booming M&A world, ultimately becoming a PwC partner. His career was rich with complex deals and close friendships, but his favorite paycheck was the $35.00 he earned for each commuter column he wrote for the Connecticut Post.
Now semi-retired, he teaches, practices karate, travels with Sally, and enjoys life with his dogs. After some friendly nudging, he joined the Y’s Men—where his inner journalist may yet reappear.
