Steve St. Onge
New member Steve St. Onge has spent his professional life as advisor to independent and major retail stores in the areas of sales and inventory forecasting and control. Originally working in a family-run sporting goods store, he spent a lot of time participating in outdoor sports such as X-C and downhill skiing, tennis, hiking, biking, along with rock and ice climbing. This was late in the 1960s and into the early 1970s.
“We were always getting into trouble buying too much product!” He figured out how to manually capture sales inventory and order information, first on graph paper, to help get things under control. Then came computers and he went to work at a computer service bureau that had designed reports for Ski and Sporting Goods retailers.
They collected, “polled” the data from the old NCR 250 cash registers, and mailed computerized sales and inventory reports back to their retail clients. Problem was the retailers had no idea how to use the info.
Traveling, he learned of a company that acted as consultants to mostly independent retailers of all types: clothing, footwear, sporting goods stores. They provided sales, inventory and open to buy reports and monthly consulting meetings to help the store owners face the cold hard facts of their over or under-inventory positions. Becoming kind of like their open to buy conscience.
Steve started his own consulting company in 2000 providing the same service for several independent retailers in the greater New York area which he still operates with Candy, his wife of 55 years.
He has a daughter Stacey who works as a special effects make-up artist in television and movies as well as an herbalist growing her organic gardens; and a son Patrick who is a captain in the Norwalk Fire Department.
