Mickey Herbst
Mickey Herbst: Westport Business Owner and Lifelong Disability Advocate
Born in 1942, Mickey grew up in Washington Heights, with a view of the George Washington Bridge and a lively neighborhood full of family and friends. After his grandfather died in 1953, his family moved to New Rochelle, where he finished high school. Asthma kept him off the athletic fields, but a nearby driving range introduced him to golf, which became a lifelong passion.
Mickey began college at Miami University in Ohio but finished at NYU’s University Heights campus, graduating with a degree in Economics in 1963. He worked at Dun & Bradstreet as a credit analyst, then at Smith-Corona Marchant selling early copying machines—technology that, in his words, “sold itself.”
After a business dispute in 1968, he stepped back to rethink his direction. A pivotal moment came on Fire Island, where he met Candace. They married in 1970 and, after a six-week cross-country trip, chose Westport as their home. Candace began a long career at The Westport Library, while Mickey opened Quick Copy on the Post Road at the foot of Main Street in 1971. He ran the printing business for 35 successful years before retiring and selling it to an employee. He also invested in local commercial real estate and today owns and manages 215 Main Street.
Mickey and Candace raised three children, including a daughter with significant developmental disabilities. That experience led Mickey to decades of advocacy for people with disabilities, including service on the STAR board and helping Connecticut transition residents from institutions into community-based group homes.
Now retired, he still golfs avidly, spends part of each winter at The Landings near Savannah, GA, and most of the year in Westport, enjoying all the family close by in Fairfield.
