Membership Milestone:

As of today we have reached a count of 600 active members.

New Member Spotlight (1 of 2):

Michael Cox: From Whitewater to the World Wide Web

Born in May 1953 in Morristown, Tennessee, Michael Cox grew up fishing the streams of the Great Smoky foothills with his father—the start of a lifelong love of the outdoors. He entered the University of Tennessee hoping to study oceanography; finding no such program, he turned to biology, earning a B.S. and M.S. in freshwater biology and guiding whitewater rafting trips through his college and graduate years.

After several years with Tennessee's environmental division doing water-quality work around Chattanooga, Michael's interests shifted toward business. He earned a master's in Decision Sciences from Georgia State in 1985, took to computers and networking, and in 1988 became one of the first people in Atlanta certified as a Novell network engineer.

That credential led to a 27-year career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which he joined in 1990 as its first network engineer. Michael built out the CDC's networks and, in the early 1990s, led its first connection to the internet—compiling the pioneering Mosaic browser himself and helping bring cdc.gov online in January 1995, among the very first websites in the federal government. He went on to run the CDC's internet services, then moved into cybersecurity, first building and then running the 24/7 security operations center for all of Health and Human Services before retiring in 2017.

Michael and his wife Carrie—a former computer scientist turned immigration lawyer and lifelong sailor—met in Atlanta in 2005 and now live full-time in Westport, drawn north by her family roots. An avid hiker, biker, kayaker, and new day-sailor, Michael—whose late father-in-law was a Y's Men president two decades ago—now joins the club in his own right, looking forward to new friendships and adventures on Long Island Sound.

New Member Spotlight (2 of 2):

Peter Pollack: Selling to Wall Street, One Era at a Time

Born in March 1935, Peter grew up in Belle Harbor, Queens, and then Woodmere, Long Island, the son of an attorney who had put himself through Brooklyn Law School at night. At Hobart College he skipped the fraternities, serving as president of the Independent Council instead, and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime—his freshman roommate later became his business partner. He earned his B.A. in 1956.

After learning to sell—Fuller brushes, furniture, typewriters, real estate—Peter joined IBM in 1961 and spent ten years selling data processing equipment to Wall Street. In 1970 ADP recruited him with an irresistible pitch: instead of selling the machines, sell the results. He spent three years selling, then ran ADP's Portfolio Record Keeping Division.

In 1976 he struck out on his own, co-founding Interim Systems, a temporary staffing firm that added a thriving Wall Street messenger division. The company was sold—for cash—in August 1987, two months before the market crashed; Peter stayed on to manage it until 1992. In 1995 he acquired Prime Office Centers, operating flexible office centers at Grand Central, Penn Station, and Wall Street until retiring in 2018, at 83.

In 1963 a blind date arranged by his mother led, four dates later, to his engagement to Ann, a schoolteacher; they married and raised a son and a daughter in Manhattan. In 1970 they bought a weekend house near the beach in Westport—from Ed Mitchell of clothing-store fame—and in 1997 traded it for a country place in Weston, where they have lived full-time since the pandemic.

Their son, Ken Pollack, an expert on Gulf state geopolitics, recently spoke to the Y's Men—and hearing him got Peter thinking about joining. Quoting Charlie Munger—as you get older, either you make new friends or you have no friends—Peter looks forward to doing exactly that.
