Born in 1955 and raised in New Orleans, Jonathan is the son of civic minded Boston transplants. He returned to family roots when he attended Harvard, where he majored in History and Science with a public health focus. He began his never completed journey back south by going to Yale for medical school and residency. There he met his future wife, Linda Bockenstedt, who convinced him to switch coasts to complete research training in San Francisco. Despite the charms of the Bay Area (cycling, hiking, eating!), they decided after looking around that Connecticut offered the best for dual careers, community, and child raising and happily settled in Weston.
Jonathan spent his career based at Norwalk Hospital, where he was recruited as a researcher, educator, and clinician in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Joining with university-based collaborators, he brought to Norwalk NIH funded research first in occupational medicine and later on pneumonia and severe infection. The latter research has greatly impacted the treatment and diagnostic choices in pneumonia care. As an educator, he led the training of a generation of fellows in pulmonary and critical care. Following Norwalk Hospital’s merger with Danbury Hospital, Jonathan directed the medical training programs at both hospitals and completed the establishment of the University of Vermont College of Medicine’s clinical branch campus at Norwalk and Danbury Hospitals. He formally retired from Norwalk Hospital and practice in 2025, though he is reluctant to use the term retired because he spends much of his time running the greater family’s business on the Gulf (of Mexico) Coast.
Linda and he raised two children, Benjamin and Rebecca, who now live near each other in New York. Ben and his wife have 2 children, who have activated the grandparent’s gene and induced frequent commutes on Metronorth. Having heard for years about the friendships and engaging activities of the Y’s Men, Jonathan looks forward to meeting the members and enjoying its fellowship.
