Y’s Men Volunteers Needed For Compo Beach Playground Re-Build
We are less than two weeks away from starting reconstruction of our crown jewel at the beach - the Playground. The Playground Committee has done a great job preparing for a fun, community event to improve this great play space for the next generation. We know that many Y’s Men participated in the 1989 and 2006 building projects, so it’s time to “strap on” those tool belts and volunteer one more time on behalf of your grandchildren and all the other kids in our community.
Do you have tools you could loan? Miter Saws, Drills, Sanders and Routers are needed most.
The Committee is currently collecting tools to be loaned and used for the entire build week Tool Drive . You will get them back after Sunday, April 27. You can deliver those tools this weekend, Saturday, April 12, from 9:00 am to noon, or Sunday, April 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm to the Compo Beach Playground site.
If delivery to the beach this weekend is not possible, email compoplayground@gmail.com and the Playground Committee can coordinate a pick up. All tools will be marked and stored safely during the week. If a tool is damaged or goes missing, it will be replaced.  Build Week Volunteers Are Needed! Three shifts daily, with meals/snacks served.  You are welcome to work any/every day. Since both parents of most young kids work, the Playground Committee needs help from those of us who are around town during the day. Any level of skill is welcome; most jobs do not require construction knowledge.

Opportunity to Help Fund a Cure for MS at Walk on May 3

Support Y's Man Sal Cassano and his daughter Nikki as she battles MS by participating in the MS Walk at Sherwood Island in Westport on Saturday, May 3.

His goal is a modest $2,000, and any amount you can spare will go a long way in trying to find a cure. The MS Society is very optimistic that a cure is near.

For more information on the MS Walk you can reach out to Sal directly at 475-331-2887 or email him at salcassano35@gmail.com.

Thursday Talk: "The Partnership" by Ted Aldrich

Author Ted Aldrich talked about his book "The Partnership" at last Thursday's meeting.

Y’s Men were treated to a fascinating talk by Westport resident, Ted Aldrich, at last Thursday's meeting on his recently published book "The Partnership" written during his commute to and from work in Manhattan.

The book focuses on key considerations leading up to the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan in World War II. The three men responsible for the decision were new President Harry Truman, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, and Army Chief of Staff George Marshall.

After assuming power following the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945, Truman held a critical meeting at the White House. He had little knowledge of the Manhattan Project, because FDR, who did not like Truman, had shut him out. At the meeting, the three deliberated the pros and cons of dropping the bomb.

Among the criteria were: 1. Ending the war quickly with minimum loss of Allied life. It was unanimously concluded that an invasion was necessary, and would cost up to a million Allied lives. 2. The US was stretched in manpower and equipment. 3. Revenge for the Pearl Harbor infamy, and the Bataan Death March. 4. The second choice of a blockade would have cost millions of Japaneses lives.

In the end, the pros carried the day. As Shakespeare famously observed, “ ….and some have greatness thrust upon them.” He had been president for only a short while, but Truman made one of the most momentous and largely supported decisions in world history.
