The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) will meet tomorrow (Monday, April 7) in Room 203/204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 9:00 am.
New developments on the international scene will be discussed. Certainly, the imposition of tariffs enacted today (April 2) will provide fuel for many hot talk topics. As GIDG Moderator Frank Wood has advised the Group: "Keep your eyes on the news"
because it will be the source of many a GIDG discussion.
For more information on GIDG, contact Frank at fwood227@gmail.com.

Y's Men LifeTalk Group to Meet This Tuesday
The next Y's Men LifeTalk meeting will be this Tuesday, April 8, at 2:00 pm at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in rooms 109-110.

| | This Thursday: The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb on Japan | | |
Ted Aldrich
It’s Complicated: The decision by the United States on how — not if — to use the atomic bomb during World War II.
Ted Aldrich, author of "The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration that Won World War II," will focus his talk on all the factors that went into the decision by Henry Stimson who — working closely with George Marshall — was given the responsibility by President Roosevelt and then later President Truman to make a recommendation on how to use the atomic bomb once it was developed and successfully tested.
Addressing many of the misconceptions which formed in the years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki as to the reasons the USA used the new weapon of mass destruction, Aldrich will try to place the audience in the shoes of Stimson, Marshall, FDR, Truman, Jimmy Byrnes, other civilian and military figures of influence, and the American public during the brief period of time the decision about the bombs was made and will outline all the considerations that went into the deliberations about it.
The author will draw on extensive research he conducted on the decision while writing his book on the wartime collaboration of Stimson and Marshall and will spend a bit of time reviewing again the background of Secretary of War Henry Stimson to give a sense of the man to whom so much responsibility was given.

Y’s Men Volunteers Needed For Compo Beach Playground Re-Build
We are exactly two weeks away from starting reconstruction of our crown jewel at the beach - the Playground. The Playground Committee has done a great job preparing for a fun, community event to improve this great play space for the next generation. We know that many Y’s Men participated in the 1989 and 2006 building projects, so it’s time to “strap on” those tool belts and volunteer one more time on behalf of your grandchildren and all the other kids in our community. And even if you can’t be there for the building project, please consider lending some tools to the Playground Committee.
Build Week is Monday, April 21 through Saturday April 26. The Playground Committee has raised all the money necessary, the demolition is complete, and the excess sand has been removed, but we still need volunteers to work and folks to loan us tools during the build.
Build Week Volunteers: Three shifts daily, with meals/snacks served. You are welcome to work any/every day. Since both parents of most young kids work, we need help from those of us who are around town during the day. Any level of skill is welcome; most jobs do not require construction knowledge.
To Volunteer: Go to: https://www.compobeachplayground.com/
If you have tools to lend (or donate) for the week, here is a Google docs link with the opportunity to list what you can share:

| | Kostya Kennedy Rides Back with Paul Revere | | |
Kostya Kennedy talked about his book on Paul Revere last Thursday.
Noted historian and author Kostya Kennedy returned to show the Y's Men on Thursday that no one ever tires of hearing about Paul Revere. He said that may be due to the Longfellow poem not published until 1860.
Kennedy read several passages from his new book, "Paul Revere: The Ride and How it Saved America." And posed this crucial question: What would have happened to our country if the Minutemen had not been alerted by Paul Revere and had not been at Lexington and Concord to fight the British?
Kennedy also told the little-known story of the British warship HMS Somerset sent to battle colonists but wrecked off Truro on Cape Cod. And a shift in the tide revealing its wooden structure coming out of the sand in 1973.
The local paper, The Provincetown Advocate, described it as “return of a ghost ship.” Kennedy said the National Park Service cut off all the pieces it could for preservation before the sand covered it again.
