Fairfield University President, Dr. Mark Nemec,
Speaks This Thursday
| |
|
Dr. Marc Nemec
Many Y’s Men know Fairfield University primarily through attending events at the Quick Center for the Arts. But during the past eight years, under the leadership of its President, Dr. Mark Nemec, the University has emerged on the national level as an academic, and even athletic, powerhouse.
Dr. Nemec will give us some insight on how Fairfield University has become one of the top 125 national universities, one of the top 12 percent of colleges for salary impact, grown its enrollment by 25 percent and contributed $1 billion to our local economy. He may even talk about his rugby prowess and how the Fairfield University Women’s Basketball team became “the other CT women’s team” in the NCAA Division 1 top 25.
He will share his nationally recognized insights on the current and future state of higher education – measuring the NPV of going to college and redefining the missions of our colleges and universities for the 21st Century.
Y's Men Thursday morning meetings are in Hoskins Hall downstairs in the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport. As always, donut and bagel social hour 9:00 to 10:00 am, short business meeting at 10:00, and speaker starts at 10:30 finishing no later than 11:30. Come early and meet your fellow members. Guests are always welcome.

Jere van Dyk Speaks to Y's Men About His Stormy Career | |
|
Jere van Dyk addresses the Y's Men last Thursday.
Pulitzer-nominated journalist and book author Jere Van Dyk gave the Y’s Men on Thursday an emotional introduction to his life before his infamous capture and imprisonment by the Taliban in 2008.
A former New York Times correspondent, he covered the region after 9/11 until 2017 for CBS television. In that year, his book was published: Captive: My Time as a Prisoner of the Taliban.
He traced the origin of “state-sponsored political kidnapping" to 1801 when pirates captured an American ship off the coast of North Africa, and President Thomas Jefferson paid a ransom for the sailors.
