Sign Up and Pay for Summer Tennis by This Friday

Summer tennis will be here before you know it and we will be set to go with our Courts, Balls and Roster of Players, says Dewey Loselle, chairman of Y's Men summer tennis. If you are interested in playing, now is the time to take action. We will have a lot of returning guys and new players are welcome.

We play at Longshore on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:00 am for an hour and a half. All skill/experience levels are welcome. We play doubles only and will find good matches and games for everyone.

For everyone interested in playing, please pay $320.00 at this time via the credit card link below or send in a check payable to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston, P.O. Box 167, Westport, CT 06880.  Y’s Men deadline to register and pay is Friday, March 28.

Westport residents need to get (or renew) a Senior Premium Tennis Pass from the Department of Parks and Recreation, and non-residents just pay the daily fee at the window each time they play. Players also need to be a Y's Man in good standing with paid up dues.

New players to summer tennis should contact Dewey at DeweyLoselle@gmail.com.

Jim Himes Addresses SRO Y's Men Meeting Last Thursday

U.S. Representative Jim Himes talks to Y's Men last week.

Our nine-term congressman, Jim Himes, told an SRO crowd at last Thursday’s meeting that if President Trump ignores orders of the Supreme Court, it would trigger a constitutional crisis when “a whole other set of tools might come into play like civil disobedience and general strikes.”

In an otherwise optimistic speech, Himes said, “We descend into chaos when we decide the laws apply only to others and not to us.”

Himes said he was expecting major institutions already under attack – universities like Columbia and prominent law firms like Paul Weiss – to push back against Trump. Within 48 hours of the speech, both had cut deals with him.

The New York Times said Paul Weiss, with annual revenues of $2.63 billion, “gave in” and “ended up bowing to Trump.”

His hope for the future was the same point Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made last week in a series of television interviews: “We will survive when Trump’s approval numbers dip below 40 percent. Then Republicans will start moving away from him.”

Y’s Men Memorial Day Float Committee Needs You

A Y's Men float from a previous Memorial Day parade.

For more than 20 years, Y’s Men have built award winning-floats that have been entered in the Westport Memorial Day Parade. This year, come join the Y’s Men Float Committee and be part of this winning tradition.

We need all kinds of volunteers with a wide variety of skills including designers, producers, carpenters, technicians, and actors to ride on the float, as well as volunteers to disassemble the float after the parade.

Our theme for this year's float focuses on the USO. Because we were rained out last year, our float was not entered in the parade. That means that much of the work has been done, but we still need help.

Our first meeting will be Tuesday, April 1 at the Church. If you are interested in joining a fun group of guys to help observe Memorial Day in a meaningful way, please contact Baxter Urist at burist@optonline.net

We guarantee a rewarding time while paying tribute to our brave American soldiers.

Services Announced for Y's Man Nick Clarke

As reported in the Y's Men Newsletter of Sunday, February 23, Y's Man Nick Clarke passed away on Thursday, February 20 at a care facility in Florida. He was 85.

Now it has been announced that a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 10 at Christ & Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane. Attendees are asked to please wear bright, colorful clothes (instead of the dreary, dark clothes traditionally associated with mourning) out of respect for Nicholas’s flair for eccentricity. Per his family’s understanding of his wishes, his memorial service should resemble an explosion of parrot feathers.
