Y's Men Life Talk Group to Discuss "Solitude" This Tuesday

The Y’s Men Life Talk Group will meet from 2:00 to 3:30 pm this Tuesday, May 13, in Room 109-110 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

The topic will be Solitude. There's a difference between being alone and being lonely. You can be alone and quite content, even blissful. By the same token, you can feel lonely when you are in a crowd of people — or in a close relationship with someone.

How do you see it? Is solitude a welcome break, or something to be avoided? Join us on the May 13 to share your experience and listen to other, very ‘Y's' Men!

Concert Pianists Wow the Classical Music Society in Concert

Sporting the descriptive title, “Nocturnes and Serenades,” acclaimed concert pianists Dr. Liang-Fang Chang and Dr. Uriel Tsachor (above) performed to an enthusiastic audience of more than 140 eager Y’s Men, their families and other eager Westporters late last month in the Sanctuary of the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

The concert, jointly sponsored by the Y’s Men and the church, featured a world premier and a collection of pieces selected by the performers, combining older classical pieces, some with more contemporary arrangements.

A wine and cheese reception followed the concert. The link to a video of the concert is below.

Barnum Museum Executive Director Addresses Progress

Kathleen Maher
At a Thursday meeting on May 1, Y’s Men listened to Kathleen Maher, Executive Director of the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, give a highly informative talk on the museum's famous founder, and progress that has been made since it was severely damaged by a tornado in 2010.
Born in 1810, Barnum was not only a founder of the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus, but a mayor of Bridgeport, member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, philanthropist, and author. He died and was buried in Bridgeport in 1891.
The Barnum Museum he funded was completed in 1893. After its near destruction in 2010, Kathleen led the restoration effort which has cost $17 million, is on track, but still five years and $22 million short of the estimated completion budget and date. Her future plan envisions a new museum that integrates history, the arts, science, and technology.

Delamar CEO Updates Y's Men on Westport Delamar Inn

Charles Mallory

"The Conrad Hilton of Fairfield County" said the former Westport Inn on Post Road East will have a soft opening as Westport Delamar within a month.

Charles Mallory, CEO of Greenwich Hospitality Group, told last Thursday's Y’s Men meeting that the renovated hotel will rent rooms and serve breakfast shortly, add a restaurant during the summer, and be fully open for business in the fall. Rooms will include a three-bedroom suite.

Mallory’s group, a collection of boutique hotels almost all in Connecticut, already operates in Westport as the latest manager of Le Plage restaurant at the Inn at Long Shore and a partner in the complete renovation of the Inn. Partner Michael Ryan, a former Wall Street executive, also attended the Thursday meeting.

“The building was in horrific shape,” Mallory said, “being held together by Band-Aids and glue. All the mechanical and structural systems needed repair or replacement.” Renovations have continued all winter, especially on the ballroom, and no timetable was given on completion during his talk.

Mallory’s group owns and operates Delamar-branded hotels in Southport, Stamford, Greenwich and West Hartford. In February, Delamar Mystic opened on the water. The only hotel outside the state is in Traverse City, Michigan.
