Westport, Weston Selectwomen Wrap Y’s Men Speaker Season

Weston First Selectwoman Sam Nestor (left) and Westport First Seletwoman Jen Tooker are interviewed by Y's Man and former Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe at last Thursday's Y's Men meeting, the last speaker meeting of the 2024-2025 season.

Y’s Men learned the new Westport tax rate before anyone outside town government from First Selectwoman Jen Tooker at last Thursday‘s meeting. Tooker, who is running for governor, said taxes will increase 1.2 percent next year to a new mill rate of $18.86 for each $1,000 of property assessment.

She shared the stage with Wilton First Selectwoman Sam Nestor, who emphasized the challenges of her more rural town.

“We depend on taxing people since we have only five commercial properties – including the Post Office,” she said, adding the town was building its “first ever sidewalks.”

Tooker said she’d “dance around” a question about her position on the controversial Hamlet at Saugatuck, the retail/residential/hotel/marina complex proposed around the railroad station and the river.

“It’s the single most expensive development project Westport has ever seen,” she said, noting it was in the capable hands of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Yale's Dr. Mark Mercurio Spoke About End-of Life Decisions

Dr. Mark Mercurio

How to make complicated and heart-breaking end-of-life decisions about loved ones was presented by the founder of Yale’s medical ethics programs at the Thursday, May 15 Y’s Men meeting.

Dr. Mark Mercurio, now head of Yale’s Pediatric Ethics Program, said the essential question for doctors and parents is always “What should we do?”

“’What ought we do?’ is a physiological problem,” he said. “The ethical question is ‘Should we really be doing this?’”

The issue is complicated when the patient can’t speak.

With adults, relatives’ end-of-life issues involve “substituted judgment,” he said. “The question is not what I would want in the patient’s place. But what the patient would want.”

For babies, it is the child’s best interests.

Dr. Mercurio advised anyone facing issues about a sick loved one of any age in a hospital ask to involve the institution’s “ethics committee” that can help think through the problems.

Y's Man Bob Cooper Performs with Roger Kaufman Thursday

Y's Man Bob Cooper performs with Roger Kaufman this Thursday evening at The Warehouse in Fairfield. This will be the same show presented last fall at The Westport Library, called "Road Trip to the 5 M's" - it's a bit of American popular music history combined with a live concert with an excellent band and great vocalists.

The 5 M's refers to the five locations that each produced its own flavor of r&b, soul or funk from the 1960s into the 1980s - Memphis, Macon, Miami, Muscle Shoals and Motown.

For more information call The Warehouse in Fairfield at 203-259-1036 or to buy tickets, click here.

Tickets are $20.00. Click here to purchase.
