| | Pianist Olga Vinokur Returns to Y's Men This Thursday | | |
The late Y's Men Past President Art Greenberg with Olga Vinokur at a Y's Men Concert.
The Y's Men have invited the community to join them for a special morning of classical piano when acclaimed pianist Dr. Olga Vinokur performs at the Saugatuck Congregational Church Sanctuary this Thursday, April 30, from 10:00 to 11:30 am.
The concert is dedicated to the memory of Art Greenberg, whose generous sponsorship made previous performances possible. Art passed away last November at the age of 90. This concert is made possible by Art's sons, Y's Man Jim Greenberg of Fairfield, and John Greenberg of Ramsey, N.J., and their families, who are proud to carry on their father's tradition.
As many Y's men know from her previous appearances, Dr. Vinokur is an acclaimed pianist, having been a solo performer on many of the world’s classical music stages. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, in Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Town Hall, King’s Place in London and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center among many others. She is also a prolific media personality, as well as a performer with many of the world’s great orchestras and ensembles.
Don't miss this extraordinary morning of music, presented in memory of a man who believed in the power of community and culture. The performance is free and open to all.
The concert will be preceded by the Y's Men's regular coffee social hour in Hoskins Hall from 9:00 to 9:45 am following which Y's Men and guests will proceed to the Church's sanctuary for the concert from 10:00 to 11:15 am.
| | CR Exposes High Levels of Lead in Protein Powder and Shakes | | |
Panel from Consumer Reports addressed the Y's Men last Thursday.
Consumer Report's representatives have spoken to Y's Men on a number of occasions, always enlightening us with their findings, and their dedication to consumer protection. The presentation last Thursday by Jen Shecter, Paris Marineau, Dr. Sana Miyahid, and Brian Ronholm, was no exception.
The emphasis of Thursday's presentation was the recent article written by Paris on the findings of high levels of lead in plant - based protein powders and shakes. While such products have traditionally been associated with athletes, it now is marketed as a health food and meal substitute.
How does lead appear in such food supplements advertised as promoting good health? It happens that the plants used for such supplements often grow in areas with heavy metal residues, which ultimately find their way into supplements. The dangers of lead are well known: it lingers in the body and bones; when bones break down, lead is passed into the bloodstream.
As explained by Brian, one of the obstacles faced by CR and other advocates, is that protein powders and shakes are food supplements, not regulated as a food by the Food and Drug Administration. Brian, a former undersecretary in the USDA, has worked with the State of California, proposing a bill to require protein powder manufacturers to disclose the lead levels in their products, affording educated consumers the option of selecting available alternative products, as well as providing manufacturers with the incentive to voluntarily reduce harmful levels.
CR's independence is critical to its mission and the successful investigations it has conducted over the years. It takes no product ads, and is 90 percent funded by subscriptions. Brian described himself as a "Food Policy Insider," and noted that it often takes a degree of courage by CR investigators when bringing uncomfortable hard truths to manufacturers.
