Life Talk Group Will Discuss How We Want To Be Remembered

The Y’s Men Life Talk Group will meet this Tuesday, August 12 in Room 109-110 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 3:30 pm not the usual 2:00 pm. The one-time change results from a conflict with a Church event.

In the meeting, members will address legacy: How do you want to be remembered?

While your legacy can include material possessions, this legacy refers to the lasting impact your actions, values, and influence have on the world. Ultimately, your legacy is about the imprint you leave on future generations, something that will last beyond your lifetime.

What are the things you’ve done, the actions you’ve taken that you want people to recall when they think of you? What are the milestones of your life you believe have given it the greatest meaning in the eyes of others?

For information about the Y’s Men Life Talk Group, or to be added to the Group’s email distribution list, please contact Larry Ackerman at: larry@larryackerman.com

New Openings to Play in Y's Men Summer Tennis

More than 40 players participate in the Y’s Men summer tennis program. They play doubles on seven courts on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Longshore from 8:00 to 9:30 am from May through September. In September, there are openings because some members return to playing indoors.

If you are interested in joining the group for September play, contact Y’s Men Tennis Manager Dewey Loselle at deweyloselle@gmail.com or 203-454-4171 (home) for more information or with questions.

A range of age and skill levels can be accommodated.

Y's Men Gather at Compo Every Tuesday Evening

Every Westporter knows the toughest reservation to get in town is a picnic table at South Beach in Compo (to the right of the cannons). Some even break the rules (gasp!) and spread their stuff all over one table. We’ll let them live with their conscience.

Instead, we just show up early before the sunset dinner rush even starts. Around 5:00 pm every Tuesday (weather permitting). BYO Everything is the order of the day, including a beach chair. Tons of parking right there. Beach picnic rules apply; nothing made of glass, and maybe bring a snack and beverage (alcoholic or non- alcoholic) to pass around.

Need more good news: no beach pass required! Just tell the nice young guy or gal in the gatehouse that you’re headed for the Y’s Men event.

Join Us at Sherwood Island This Thursday

As Y’s Men, we all believe in the proper and renewable use of our natural resources. In Westport that means the beach. So while we picnic on Tuesday at Compo, every Thursday at 9:00 am we gather at the Pavilion at Sherwood Island State Park.

Except for the cardboard boxes for the coffee and the great views, it’s just like the winter venue at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Same fine fellowship and donuts and bagels.

A Connecticut license plate on your car gets you in for free. Be sure to stop just beyond the young lady in the toll booth so she can see it

Come on down to chat with your fellow Y’s Men. Friends, family and guests are welcome. At 10:00 am there is an organized walk around the Park.

Thrive With Movement Offered by Weston Senior Center

Weston Y's Men: Coming this fall to the Weston Senior Activities Center is Thrive With Movement, a dynamic and interactive series of 60 minute Health and Wellness sessions blending education and exercise, designed for individuals with Parkinson's, movement or balance challenges, or anyone looking to age well through purposeful movement.

Led by Dr. Sachin Gianchandani and his team from RGG Health, it starts with a brief and informative lecture on brain health, aging and movement science, and then on to fun and functional activities including boxing, light weight training, music and movement, and balance and coordination. Modifications are available, and all abilities are welcome.

Call 203-222-2608 to receive priority notification when registration opens. Allison Lisbon, Weston Social Services Director, would be pleased to answer any questions.

Y's Men Science Fiction Book Club Re-Starting

The Y's Men Science Fiction Book Club, which has been dormant for a while, will be starting up again under the leadership of Y's Man Stephen Bentkover. To help spark an interest in the reading group, Stephen prepared the following proposal:

Of all of the classic science fiction book writers of the mid 20th century, none was more famous and possibly as prolific as Isaac Asimov. Perhaps, one of his best known and most beloved works was the famous Foundation trilogy, written between 1941 and 1953. It was the gateway to a series of prequels -- the Robot series, the Empire series -- and firmly established Asimov in the pantheon of great science fiction writers of his day.

As a way of re-starting the Sci-Fi Book Club, and after discussion with some other Y’s men, I propose that we read the Asimov's original Foundation Trilogy during the fall and rekindle our interest in this most interesting genre of literature. There are definitely some parallels to the present which were foreseen more than 75 years ago, and might lead to some fascinating discussions.

If you are interested in joining the Sci-Fi Book Club, contact Stephen Bentkover at sgb214@sbcglobal.net

Y's Man Bob Cooper to Appear with Suzanne Sheridan

Suzanne Sheridan

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Suzanne Sheridan brings her tribute to Linda Ronstadt to the Levitt Pavilion this Tuesday, August 12.

The show includes a great band: Y's Man Bob Cooper on keyboard along with Tim DeHuff, Dave Edwards, Joe Sullivan and Kim Manning.

Sheridan performs both locally (at the First Folk Sunday music series) and internationally at The Bitter End, Gertie's Folk City, and in Canada and Australia.

Click here for tickets to Sheridan (and Ronstadt's) free show.

Bob Cooper also will be playing at the Levitt this Saturday, August 16, with Billy and the Showmen, a ten (perhaps 11) piece soul band.

DNR With Y's Man Bob Altbaum to Honor First Responders

DNR, the almost all physician band featuring Y's Man Bob Altbaum, will be performing at the Levitt Pavilion on Thursday, September 11, to honor Westport's first responders. The concert will focus particularly on the town's volunteer Emergency Medical Service.

DNR will be encouraging voluntary donations and will highlight the valuable role EMS plays in caring for Westporters. If people are interested, DNR can arrange for them to join the EMT services. The concert is free.

Non-Fiction Book Club Meets This Wednesday, August 13

The Y's Men Non-Fiction Book Club will meet at 3:30 pm this Wednesday (August 13) in Room 109 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Note the change from the normal 2:00 pm meeting time to 3:30 pm for this meeting only.

Club members will be discussing a suggestion for a new and exciting meeting as well as a suggestion for the next book they will read. Members are currently reading "The Island at the Center of the World" by Russell Shorto which will be discussed at the Club's September meeting.

For additional information, contact Jeff Schwartz at 201-787-0654.

New York Times Article Covers Study of "Super-Agers"

In case you missed it, Y's Man Peter Chelico called attention to an article in The New York Times this past Thursday (August 7) that reports on "super-agers," people age 80 and up who have the same memory ability as someone 20 to 30 years younger. The article refers to scientists at Northwestern University who have been studying this group since 2000, in the hope of discovering how they’ve avoided typical age-related memory disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

Anecdotal accounts of how many super-agers live cite participation in groups and activities similar to the Y's Men. To read the article, click here.
