New Openings for Players in Y's Men Summer Tennis

More than 40 players participate in the Y’s Men summer tennis program. They play doubles on seven courts on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Longshore from 8:00 to 9:30 am from May through September. In September, there are openings because some members return to playing indoors.

If you are interested in joining the group for September play, contact Y’s Men Tennis Manager Dewey Loselle at deweyloselle@gmail.com or 203-454-4171 (home) for more information or with questions.

A range of age and skill levels can be accommodated.

Y's Men Gather at Compo Every Tuesday Evening

Every Westporter knows the toughest reservation to get in town is a picnic table at South Beach in Compo (to the right of the cannons). Some even break the rules (gasp!) and spread their stuff all over one table. We’ll let them live with their conscience.

Instead, we just show up early before the sunset dinner rush even starts. Around 5:00 pm every Tuesday (weather permitting). BYO Everything is the order of the day, including a beach chair. Tons of parking right there. Beach picnic rules apply; nothing made of glass, and maybe bring a snack and beverage (alcoholic or non- alcoholic) to pass around.

Need more good news: no beach pass required! Just tell the nice young guy or gal in the gatehouse that you’re headed for the Y’s Men event.

Annual Hot Dog Festival Set for Tuesday, September 9

The Y’s Men Annual Hot Dog Festival, postponed from its July 30 date because of hot weather, has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, September 9 at 5:00 pm. A fundraiser for Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the event will be at Compo Beach South.

Unlike the regular Tuesday evening beach picnics during the summer (see previous article) where participants bring their own food and beverage, food is provided at the Festival with hot dogs as the main attraction. You're still welcome to bring your own dinner and beverage.

The festival raises money for Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang so bring a donation in cash or a check made out to Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang.

A rain date for the event is Wednesday, September 10.

Y's Men Ancient Mariners: Call for Sailing Crew This Tuesday

The forecast for this Tuesday, August 19, looks good for a circumnavigation of the Norwalk Islands. Winds are expected to be ten knots ESE to SE with partly cloudy skies and a high of 76 degrees F.

Y's Men Ron Ryzoff will participate with his Pearson 30’ sloop, “Andiamo,” and Josh Schwartz will sail with his Pearson 31', "Pelican.” The plan is to meet on each of the two boats at 9:45 am, depart the docks no later than 10:00 am, then sail on the outside of the Norwalk Islands to Sheffield Island, where the group will rendezvous and raft up for a brown bag lunch stop and socializing.

The return will be on the inside of the Norwalk Islands with an expected arrival at the docks no later than 4:00 pm.  Crew assignments and meet-up details will be available as soon as the number of crew interested in participating is finalized.

If you are interested in joining the crew, send an email to Ron (ronryzoff@aol.com) , Josh (jms1247@sbcglobal.net), and George Kalan (gkalan@optonline.net) or contact George directly on his mobile phone (203-856-1250).

Y's Men Mindfulness Group Meets by Zoom Tomorrow Evening

A podcast recommended by Y's Man Paul Epstein of the Mindfulness Group

In its regular third Monday of the month gathering, the Y's Men Mindfulness Group will meet by Zoom from 7:30 to 8:30 pm tomorrow. The topic for discussion will be meditation practice, teachings, discussion...and integration with daily life.

To obtain a Zoom link contact Harvey Luft at Luft@gmail.com or Paul Epstein at epsteinmb@aol.com.

Paul recommends a podcast featuring Joseph Goldstein, a renowned meditation teacher, entitled "Why Meditate?" It may be viewed by clicking here.

Y's Men Bocce Players Meet Wednesday Mornings

The Y's Men Bocce Group plays every Wednesday (weather permitting) at Veterans Park, 909 Reef Road, in Fairfield.

Teams are formed and games start at 10:30 am and usually wrap up by noon. It's lots of fun so come play. No registration is required. Just show up and join a team of fellow Y's Men.  The Park has a bathroom.

Y's Men Science Fiction Book Club Re-Starting

The Y's Men Science Fiction Book Club, which has been dormant for a while, will be starting up again under the leadership of Y's Man Stephen Bentkover. To help spark an interest in the reading group, Stephen prepared the following proposal:

Of all of the classic science fiction book writers of the mid 20th century, none was more famous and possibly as prolific as Isaac Asimov. Perhaps, one of his best known and most beloved works was the famous Foundation trilogy, written between 1941 and 1953. It was the gateway to a series of prequels -- the Robot series, the Empire series -- and firmly established Asimov in the pantheon of great science fiction writers of his day.

As a way of re-starting the Sci-Fi Book Club, and after discussion with some other Y’s men, I propose that we read Asimov's original Foundation Trilogy during the fall and rekindle our interest in this most interesting genre of literature. There are definitely some parallels to the present which were foreseen more than 75 years ago, and might lead to some fascinating discussions.

If you are interested in joining the Sci-Fi Book Club, contact Stephen Bentkover at sgb214@sbcglobal.net

DNR, the Almost All-Physician Band, to Honor First Responders

DNR, the almost all-physician band, will be performing at the Levitt Pavilion on Thursday, September 11, to honor Westport's first responders. The concert will focus particularly on the town's volunteer Emergency Medical Service.

DNR will be encouraging voluntary donations and will highlight the valuable role EMS plays in caring for Westporters. If people are interested, DNR can arrange for them to join the EMT service. The concert is free.

Also, Y's Man Bob Cooper will be playing with Billy and the Showmen, a great 10 (or 11) piece soul band, this Wednesday, August 20 at Roger Sherman Park in Greenwich.

Photography Club Meets Tuesday, August 26

The Y's Men Photography Club meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 19, will be held on Tuesday, August 26 in room 109-110 at 9:30 am in the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

For the meeting, Y's Man William Weiss, chairman of the Club, has asked members to submit three of their best, well composed and sharply focused images of any subject they choose, taken with any camera. The goal is to have their images tell the story by way of good cropping, composition and focus.

Details on how best to email submissions to William may be obtained by contacting him at 201-538-5970.

At the Photography Club's last meeting, Y's Man Warren Jahn presented a comprehensive look at Macro Photography in all its goodness but with warts and all. "Well done, and thank you, Warren," said Wiliam.

Meanwhile, entries in Expo 22, the photo contest co-sponsored by the Y's Men Photography Club and the Westport Center for Senior Activities, may be submitted between Thursday, October 23, and Thursday, November 6.

Judging of entries, in eight classifications, will be on Wednesday, November 12. Three entries per person will be allowed in these categories: Landscape, Waterscape, Architectural, Portrait, Nature, Critter, General, and Highly Manipulated.

Click here to read the rules of the exhibition and obtain an entry form. Both also are available on the Y's Men website.

Pickleball Courts to be Dedicated to Tom Lowrie August 23

Tom Lowrie

Calling all pickleball players. And fans of Y's Man Tom Lowrie. And everyone else who wants to celebrate.

On Saturday, August 23 (3:00 to 5:30 pm), the pickleball courts at Compo Beach will be dedicated in honor of Lowrie.

The 97-year-old is "the father of Westport pickleball" (and much more).

There will be an exhibition with professional, nationally ranked players (and prizes). And the Y's Men's Hoot Owls will provide musical entertainment.

Bring your own beach chair and refreshments. Watch the pros. Honor Tom. And then play afterward, on the Tom Lowrie Courts.
