First Speaker of 2026: Applied Brain Science

For Successful Retirement

Allyson Maida
Allyson Maida, Ed.D., LCSW, is the featured speaker at the Y's Men's first meeting of 2026 on Thursday, January 8. "Scams and Safety" Presented to Y's Men Last Thursday

Presenting to Y's Men last Thursday on "Scams and Safety" are Westport's Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan; Police Captain Jillian Cabana; Sergeant James Baker; Fire Marshall Terry Dunn; and (at the podium) Chief of Police David Farrell.

Westport Chief of Police David Farrell; Police Captain Jillian Cabana; Sgt. James Baker; Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan; and Fire Marshall Terry Dunn provided a comprehensive and cautionary look at the expanding risks we face from sophisticated scams, including social security, IRS, the desperate grand child calling from South America, and romance scams, referred to as "Pig Butchering."

The "MO" of these scammers generally involves 1. A manufactured emergency; 2. the need for immediate action; and 3. a request for money, often by non - traditional means. Westport Police are highly skilled in addressing frauds and scams, and should be contacted immediately upon any suspicion of questionable activity.

Similarly, our fire department has adjusted and adapted to new and increased risks brought about by climate change, longer power outages, aging infrastructure and population, as well as the traditional holiday exposures such as fireplace ashes, overloaded wiring, and dry Christmas trees.

Because of technical difficulties, a video of Thursday's presentation is unavailable. To view the slides that were presented: Click here:

New Y's Men Activity: The Fraud Protection Club

They also will discuss possible approaches to proactively securing those assets independent of government agencies and banks.

The Club will meet monthly. Anyone interested in joining should contact Jeff Schwartz at jandjschwartz@gmail.com

Separately, Capt. Jillian Cabana of the Westport Police Department's Detective Bureau provided this chart from the Connecticut Intelligence Bureau as part of an article on how to prevent financial crimes against seniors.
