Y's Men Gather at Compo Every Tuesday Evening
Every Westporter knows the toughest reservation to get in town is a picnic table at South Beach in Compo (to the right of the cannons). Some even break the rules (gasp!) and spread their stuff all over one table. We’ll let them live with their conscience.
Instead, we just show up early before the sunset dinner rush even starts. Around 5:00 pm every Tuesday (weather permitting). BYOEverything is the order of the day, including a beach chair. Tons of parking right there. Beach picnic rules apply; nothing made of glass, and maybe bring a snack to pass around.
Need more good news: no beach pass required! Just tell the nice young guy or gal in the gatehouse that you’re headed for the Y’s Men event. Although you don't have to have a beach pass, if you have a car with a beach pass, please use it if possible.
| | Thursday Morning Social Hour Continues at Compo Beach | | |
Y's Men gather at the Compo Beach pavilion for coffee, bagels and donuts last Thursday.
Nearly 100 Y's Men showed up to enjoy coffee, bagels, and doughnuts at last Thursday’s Social Hour. The event is held every Thursday from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Unlike previous years, the gatherings are at the Compo Beach Pavilion, not at Sherwood Island which is undergoing renovations.
If you don't have a parking permit, just tell the gate attendant that you are there for the Y's Men gathering.
The Social Hour Committee has asked for help in improving our visibility at the beach this season. If you have a beach sticker on your car, please consider driving that vehicle to next week’s Social Hour. Having more stickered cars on site helps present a clearer picture of Y’s Men's participation and supports our ongoing efforts with access and permits. Thanks for the help.

T&E Committee Seeks New Members
Almost weekly, the Y's Men Trips and Events committee sends out emails offering a wide variety of activities: Walks, history and art museums, places of interest, cultural gems, baseball and football games, gardens, boat trips, train rides amongst many other things to interest the Y’s Men.
It’s a lot of work coming up with ideas, organizing the event and getting out the emails. We’re looking for new members who might have fresh ideas and are willing to put in the effort to learn the system and help us provide even more variety to the membership.
If you see this as a possible fit, please contact Y’s Man Alan Zimbard at azmajor@msn.com

Y's Men Philosophy Club Being Proposed
A Philosophy Club is being proposed by Y's Man John Schwartens, in which concepts of the groups' choosing are examined within the broader context of the Western Philosophical tradition. The main focus is intended to be on “doing” philosophy - employing critical thinking to examine theoretical concepts, and understanding how such concepts are viewed in different contexts which have evolved over time.
Readings may be selected by the group, or suggested by John such that a specific philosopher’s work will assist in probing the deeper meaning of a particular issue. As an example, when discussing civic duty (or lack thereof) we could use Plato’s dialogues (Apology, Crito), Thoreau (Civil Disobedience) and/or Martin Luther King (Letter from the Birmingham Jail).
After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from the University of Chicago, John's career turned to earning a living in banking and corporate finance, so it is not without a sense of irony that he hopes to return to his academic roots.
If you are interested in joining this new club, please send John Schwartens an e-mail at john@schwartens.net

Interested in "Subbing" with Y's Men Summer Tennis League?
From time to time our regular playing group needs an additional player or two on a particular day. If you don't really want to commit to a whole summer schedule, but might like to play occasionally, this might be for you.
We play on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:00 to 9:30 am at the Longshore Tennis Courts in Longshore Park. We play on seven Har-Tru Courts. It's a friendly group. We are looking for players that are rated 2.5 or better.
If interested in being a "sub" please contact Dewey Loselle at DeweyLoselle@gmail.com or call 203- 454-4171

A Place for Y's Men Ladies to Meet
During Summer Y's Men Social Hour
Liz Wong, wife of Y's Man Jim Wong, is organizing a new meet-up for wives, girlfriends and daughters of Y’s Men.
The group would meet at Compo Beach where the Y's Men are meeting during the summer. It would get together during the same time the Y’s Men have their weekly Thursday coffee meetings, which is from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. The women would meet in another location at the park, separate from the Pavilion, to sit and talk with each other.
The group could also offer great support for wives who have husbands who are infirm. In that case, these women could bring their spouses to the beach to meet with the guys and then have something to do themselves while the men are having their coffee. In another scenario the wife may be infirm but would like to socialize. In that case the Y's Man could bring his wife to the group while he goes to the coffee. It’s a win-win for everyone! Guys, talk to your wives if they don’t get our newsletter themselves.
Note that this will not be a Y’s Men club and should not be confused with The Y's Women of Westport, which is a group that, like the Y's Men, sponsors speakers and provides a variety of its own activities.
If interested, have your wife, partner or family member contact Liz Wong at liz.yswives@gmail.com
| | Another Y's Men Group Tours Prospect Gardens | | Newly-delivered statue to Prospect Gardens to be installed on stone base. | | | Y's Men and guests tour Prospect Gardens. | | | |
Last Thursday morning, another group of Y’s Men and guests toured Prospect Gardens in Westport, guided by garden designer Cindy Shumate. They had the special treat of seeing a newly delivered lion statue adorned with hand-painted bronze bananas, still resting on its shipping crate for now. A stone base will ultimately be built to showcase this whimsical piece.
The sculpture was created by New York–based artist Tony Matelli of Matelli Studio, an American sculptor known for hyperreal works that often incorporate bronze bananas and other surprising everyday forms. During the visit, they also met one of the garden’s owners, Melissa Ceriale, who, together with her husband, has helped transform Prospect Gardens into a remarkable 8.5‑acre arboretum-style landscape.
Thanks to Y’s Men Past President Baxter Urist for arranging this visit to one of Westport’s hidden treasures.

Fiction Book Club to Discuss "The Remains of the Day"
Kazuo Ishiguro's "The Remains of the Day," for which the author won a Nobel Prize in Literature, will be the book up for discussion when the Y's Men Fiction Book Club meets this Thursday, June 18, at 1:30 pm in Room 211 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.
All Y's Men and guests are invited to attend either to observe or, if they have read the book, to participate in the discussion.
Carlos Fuentes's "The Old Gringo" will be the book members discuss at their meeting on Thursday, July 16. The Group meets regularly on the third Thursday of the month at the Church, same time and room number.
If you are interested in attending or would like additional information, contact Y's Man Chris Lewis at celewis14@gmail.com.

Follow-up to Y's Men From Consumer Reports Panelist in April
Consumer Reports investigative journalist Paris Martineau, who spoke to the Y’s Men last April, has just sent our group a note saying, "I want to share a new investigation I recently reported with Yuka examining additives and contaminants in popular processed foods."
The tests found concerning levels of certain additives or contaminants in many well-known products and underscored ongoing gaps in U.S. food safety oversight.
