Y's Man Bob Weingarten Authors Book on Westport History

Y's Man Bob Weingarten

A book about the history of Westport written by Y's Man Bob Weingarten will debut on Wednesday, July 8 at 6:00 pm at the Westport Book Shop. Entitled "Westport Connecticut: The Old and New Historical Accounts,” the book consists of 37 articles (or chapters) about various aspects of the town including the settling of Green's Farms, the history of "Long Lots," Longshore, and the five oldest known houses in Westport.

The 234-page book — plus four appendices, and an index — is the first history of the town since Woody Klein’s “Westport Connecticut: The Story of a New England Town’s Rise to Prominence” was published in 2000.

A complete write up appeared recently in Dan Woog's "06880." Click here to read it.

For more information, and to purchase the book, email Bob at rwmailbox@aol.com.

Copp's Island Oystering Trip Postponed

The tour of the Copp's Island Oystering operation in Norwalk scheduled for tomorrow (Monday, June 29) has been postponed. It will be offered later in the summer and those registered for Monday will be advised of the new date when it becomes available.

A shortage of a boat for the tour and illness of a crew member were cited as reasons for the postponement.

Military History Group: Westport in the Civil War

The next meeting of the Y's Men Military History Group will be led by Y's Man David Press who will discuss Westport’s contribution to and involvement in the Civil War effort. David has conducted considerable original source research on the Civil War topic of local interest. His focus will be on Westport’s war veterans and the roles they played in the community.

Y's Man Paul Rohan has succeeded Mark Perlman as chair of the Group which will meet at 10:30 am on Monday, July 6 in Room 211 of the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

The Military History Group meets regularly at 10:30 am on the first Monday of each month. All are welcome to attend. For additional information, contact Paul at pr68@cornell.edu or 203-627-1001.

Y's Men Ancient Mariners Sail – Tuesday, June 30

After weeks of unsettled weather, Ancient Mariners leader Y's Man George Kalan says Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day for a sail to Ziegler’s Cove—one of the most beautiful spots along our coast. The forecast calls for moderate winds, partly sunny skies, and comfortable temperatures, with a favorable midday tide.

Plan: Meet at 8:30 am, depart Westport by 8:45 am, sail to Ziegler’s Cove, raft up for a bring-your-own lunch, and return by approximately 4:30 pm.

Boats confirmed so far: Pelican (Josh Schwartz), Andiamo (Ron Ryzoff), Coho (John Durkin).

Crew assignments and final details to follow.

Interested members should contact George Kalan at grkalan@gmail.com or 203-856-1250.

Proposed Y's Men Philosophy Club to Meet Tuesday

The Philosophy Club proposed by Y's Man John Schwarten will meet this Tuesday, June 30 at 8:30 am at GG and Joe, 165 Main Street in Westport.

The Club's main focus is on “doing” philosophy - employing critical thinking to examine theoretical concepts, and understanding how such concepts are viewed in different contexts which have evolved over time.

If you are interested in joining the Club, or want more information, contact John at john@schwartens.net or 203-952-6404.
