GIDG to Address a Wide Range of Topics Tomorrow

A recent meeting of the Global Issues Discussion Group.

The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) will meet tomorrow (Monday, June 30) in Room 203/204 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 9:00 am. The discussion will revolve around the Mid-East in general and the situations in Gaza, Iran, Israel and the United States in particular.

According to Y's Man Frank Wood, "We have had some very exciting discussions of hot spots in the international community. Our discussions have been led wisely by team leader Harvey Luft. His 'Green Ball' process has maintained proper order.

"The discussions have been extremely informative because so many of the members have lived and worked in the countries discussed. Examples: Sudan, Iran, Israel and Canada. This week we no doubt will delve into the outcome of the U.S. bombing of the nuclear facilities in Iran."

For more information on GIDG, contact Harvey Luft at harveyluft@gmail.com.

Y's Men Gather at Compo Every Tuesday Evening

Come join us at Compo Beach every Tuesday evening around 5:00 pm (weather permitting). Just 650 steps west of the cannons.

Beach picnic rules apply, no glasses allowed; maybe a snack to pass around.

Bring your own chairs.

If the weather looks nice this Tuesday...come and enjoy new and old friends.

Y's Men Bocce Players Meet Wednesdays

The Y's Men Bocce Group plays every Wednesday (weather permitting) at Veterans Park, 909 Reef Road, in Fairfield. The Park has a bathroom.

Teams are formed and games start at 10:30 am and usually wrap up by noon. It's lots of fun so come play. No registration is required. Just show up and join a team of fellow Y's Men.

Author Ted Aldrich Guest at Non-Fiction Book Club July 9

The Y's Men Non-Fiction Book Club has invited the entire membership to attend what it expects to be a different and exciting meeting on Wednesday, July 9 at 4:30 pm in room 109 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. It will be the first time that an author will be part of the program at a Club meeting.

Ted Aldrich, author of "The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration That Won World War II," will be the featured guest at the meeting. He spoke about the book at a Y's Men regular Thursday morning meeting in April.

Because seating is limited, contact Y's Man Jeff Schwartz by phone or text message at 201-787-0654 if you plan to attend. Y's Men do not have to be a member of the Club to be at the meeting.

Save the Date: Wednesday, July 30 for Annual Hot Dog Picnic

The Y’s Men have held an Annual Hot Dog Festival as a fundraiser for Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for many years at Compo Beach South. This year's picnic is scheduled for 5:00 pm on Wednesday, July 30

As you know, Y's Men are invited to a beach picnic starting around 4:30 pm every Tuesday during the summer. You're welcome to bring your own dinner and beverage.

However, at this event, the food is provided, with hot dogs as the main attraction.

The festival is held to raise money for Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang so bring your cash or check!

Y's Men West Point Football Outing Set for September 20

The annual Y's Men Football Outing to West Point has been set for Saturday, September 20 when Army plays the University of North Texas.

Kick off, although not yet officially announced, usually is at noon. That allows time for a pre-game tailgate party with attendees bringing their own beverages but with the organizers providing the victuals. Ask them -- Y's Men Matt Calish, Rich Freeman, Joe Reardon, and Jake Salik -- if you need additional information.

Otherwise, click here to purchase tickets at $74.00 per person ($54.00 for ticket and parking with a projection of $20.00 for food). Sign up is requested no later than tomorrow (Thursday, June 26).

Are We Truly “Wise” Men?

Our name, Y's Men, conveys an important message about who we are, but are we living up to our name? We believe so and here’s a way we can demonstrate that!

Think about experiences, happenings, conversations, actions you’ve taken that you feel highlight something wise you’ve done in the course of your day (today or in the past) that helped someone – small things, bigger things – it doesn't matter. What matters is that you did it. We are a group of caring men with interesting lives.

How it might work: Whenever you’re moved to do so, email a short description – no more than 200 to 300 words – of something you did that had a positive impact on someone, or some group. Let’s consider these Moments of Wysdom from Y's Men!

Send your “moments” to Larry Ackerman, who leads the Y's Men Life Talk Group (larry@larryackerman.com). He will review and edit them for clarity. Then, we’ll publish these submissions on our Facebook page, periodically, when we collect a sufficient number of them.
