New Officers and Directors Voted in at Annual Meeting

Outgoing President Mike Boyle calls the annual meeting to order last Thursday.

Y's Man Past President John Brandt presented a Y's Men Lifetime Membership certificate to famed actor Jim Naughton for his voiceover contribution to this year's Memorial Day Parade float. Past President Baxter Urist presented a similar certificate to Vincent Penna, who has supplied the float’s trailer for many years.

More than 120 Y’s Men turned out for the annual meeting at the pavilion at Compo Beach last Thursday where they voted unanimously to approve officers and directors for the 2026-2027 year.

Outgoing president Mike Boyle gave a heartfelt commentary on his year at the helm and welcomed incoming president Nabil Atweh.

In addition, lifetime Y's Men membership certificates were given to actor Jim Naughton, who provided the voice-over for the club’s Memorial Day parade float, and to Vincent Penna, who has supplied the float’s trailer for many years. Both honors were presented by past presidents Baxter Urist and John Brandt.

Y's Man Past President Roy McKay thanked all who joined together to build an outstanding float detailing military history in celebration of the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding.

Annual Y's Men Owl Awards were presented to Allan Siegert, Bill Blaufuss, Ed Bloch and Dick Kalt for their outstanding service during the past year.

T&E Committee Seeks New Members

Almost weekly, the Y's Men Trips and Events committee sends out emails offering a wide variety of  activities:  Walks, history and  art museums, places of interest, cultural gems, baseball and football games, gardens, boat trips, train rides amongst many other things to interest the Y’s Men.

It’s a lot of work coming up with ideas, organizing the event and getting out the emails.  We’re looking for new members who might have fresh ideas and are willing to put in the effort to learn the system and help us provide even more variety to the membership.

If you see this as a possible fit, please contact Y’s Man Alan Zimbard at azmajor@msn.com

Interested in "Subbing" with Y's Men Summer Tennis League?

From time to time our regular playing group needs an additional player or two on a particular day. If you don't really want to commit to a whole summer schedule, but might like to play occasionally, this might be for you.

We play on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:00 to 9:30 am at the Longshore Tennis Courts in Longshore Park. We play on seven Har-Tru Courts. It's a friendly group. We are looking for players that are rated 2.5 or better.

If interested in being a "sub" please contact Dewey Loselle at DeweyLoselle@gmail.com or call 203- 454-4171

A Place for Y's Men Ladies to Meet

During Summer Y's Men Social Hour

Liz Wong, wife of Y's Man Jim Wong, is organizing a new meet-up for wives, girlfriends and daughters of Y’s Men.

The group would meet at Compo Beach where the Y's Men are meeting during the summer. It would get together during the same time the Y’s Men have their weekly Thursday coffee meetings, which is from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. The women would meet in another location at the park, separate from the Pavilion, to sit and talk with each other.

The group could also offer great support for wives who have husbands who are infirm. In that case, these women could bring their spouses to the beach to meet with the guys and then have something to do themselves while the men are having their coffee. In another scenario the wife may be infirm but would like to socialize. In that case the Y's Man could bring his wife to the group while he goes to the coffee. It’s a win-win for everyone! Guys, talk to your wives if they don’t get our newsletter themselves.

Note that this will not be a Y’s Men club and should not be confused with The Y's Women of Westport, which is a group that, like the Y's Men, sponsors speakers and provides a variety of its own activities.

If interested, have your wife, partner or family member contact Liz Wong at  liz.yswives@gmail.com

Military History Group to Discuss Battle of Shiloh

The Battle of Shiloh, fought in April 1862, will be the subject of discussion when the Y's Men Military History Group meets tomorrow (Monday, June 1) at 10:15 am in room 211 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Y's Man Bill Chase will facilitate the discussion.

The Group meets on the first Monday of the month at the same time and place. For additional information, contact Y's Man Mark Perlman at firstdiv@optonline.net

Y's Men Enjoy a Visit to Y's Man Win Allen's Historic Home

Plaque at Y's Man Win Allen's home where Y's Men gathered after disassembling this year's Memorial Day parade float.

The Y's Men outfitted a crew and built a float that would have been a sure award winner again this year. But the rains came and would not go away and the parade was cancelled.

Y's Man Frank Wood reports, "We took it all down and stored it for next year. Then we went over to Win Allen's Historic home in Saugatuck and enjoyed some relaxing drinks and refreshments.

"His home is very special and we all enjoyed being his guest in it."

Y's Men and Guests Visit Prospect Gardens

Y's Men and guests roam the nine-acre Prospect Gardens on Friday. A second tour has been organized for Wednesday, June 10 (see T&E listing above).

Photo by Y's Man J. Scott Broder

Y’s Men visited Prospect Gardens, a private arboretum‑style property off Prospect Road in Westport, for a guided tour of its nearly nine‑acre landscape on Friday.

Leading the tour was designer and curator Cindy Shumate, who walked the group through orchards, perennial beds, woodland paths, a meditation garden, and a four‑tier amphitheater.

The visit, organized by Y's Men Past President Baxter Urist, coincided with peak peony bloom across the gardens.

David Pogue on "Apple: The First 50 Years" June 2 at Library

David Pogue, Emmy Award-winning CBS News correspondent and one of the most trusted voices in tech, and many times a Y's Men speaker, will appear at The Westport Library for a fascinating look at the story behind one of the world’s most iconic companies.

Drawing from his new book Apple: The First 50 Years, Pogue will take you inside the rise, fall, and reinvention of Apple, sharing surprising insights, untold stories, and firsthand accounts from the people who built it.

Whether you’re a lifelong Apple fan, a tech enthusiast, or simply curious about how innovation shapes our world, this is a rare chance to hear the real story behind a company that has transformed the way we live, work, and connect. With wit, depth, and decades of expertise, Pogue brings clarity and context to Apple’s legacy — and what its future might hold.

Say the word “Apple,” flash the famous logo, or play the familiar sounds of an Apple device, and you'll spark instant recognition—and usually a strong reaction. With billions of customers around the world, Apple isn’t just a tech giant; it’s one of the most influential, resented, and also beloved companies in history.

It’s hard to imagine a time when Apple wasn’t dominant, but during Steve Jobs’s absence in the late Eighties and early Nineties, it was struggling to survive, only weeks from bankruptcy. And yet, when the company turned 50 on April 1, 2026, it was one of the most valuable companies on earth, with a worth approaching $4 trillion.

Y's Men Observe 250 Years of Military Service and Sacrifice

Once again, the Y's Men of Westport/Weston created what surely would have been an award-winning Memorial Day Parade float, but Mother Nature stepped in and the parade was canceled. So, to celebrate the effort, the group made lemonade out of lemons.

Here is a behind the scenes look at how, year after year, the Y's Men create the best overall float in the parade. Click this link:
