Happy Thanksgiving: No Thursday Y's Men Meeting This Week

Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday this week. There will be no Y's Men meeting on Thursday, November 27.

We resume regular Thursday meetings on December 4 when our guest speaker will be Dr. Vanessa Hurta, Director of Clinical Services of the Aspetuck Health District which serves Westport, Weston and Easton.

Y's Man George Kalan: Bringing Apollo 13 Astronauts Home

George Kalan addresses Y's Men last Thursday.

Many of us have seen Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" with Tom Hanks informing Mission Control: "Houston, we've had a problem." While a compelling film, it pales in comparison to the real-time, first-hand and incredible account of the events of April 1970, presented by Y's Man George Kalan.

As a 25-year old engineer, George played a critical role in the second mission: reversing the course of the severely damaged spacecraft 200,000 miles from Earth, and returning its exhausted, water, food, heat and sleep - deprived astronauts home safely.

George described the causes of the explosion and the unprecedented scientific and

engineering challenges facing the team with professional expertise and clarity, as well

as self - effacing modesty. It was a pleasure, and a privilege, to hear his account of this

"successful failure."

Y's Men Invited to Participate in The Legacy Project

Calling all Y’s Men who would like to participate in The Legacy Project, a special program connecting Staples High School students with older adults to build meaningful, one-on-one relationships across generations.

Each student will meet individually with a participating adult to listen, learn, and help document their unique life story. For more information, email Stella DiGeronimo at stella.digeronimo@icloud.com.

We Are Looking for More Hoot Owls

The Hoot Owls is the singing group, or Glee Club, of the Y's Men. It has been serving the area's senior facilities for more than 50 years. Led by music director Chris Coogan, a well known Jazz musician, pianist, singer and composer.

If you are interested in singing and enjoy entertaining your follow seniors, please consider joining the Hoot Owls. No audition necessary.

Contact: Bob Leng at Leng_7@msn.com or 978-289-0940.

Mindfulness Group Zoom Call Set for Tomorrow Evening

The next scheduled Y's Men Mindfulness Group Zoom Call will be held tomorrow (Monday November 24) from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. It will take place only if there is a quorum of five attending.  Please respond to Paul Epstein or Jeff Rubin at your earliest convenience if you would like to participate. Paul and Jeff's email addresses are, respectively, epsteinmb@aol.com and jeffrubinwpt11@gmail.com

Paul has a conflict on Thursday, December 4 so the next "Just for Men" meeting at the Westport Center for Senior Activities will be on the following Thursday, December 11, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

Y's Man Les Dinkin Lead Sponsor on Jamaica Relief Event

Y's Man Les Dinkin invites Y's Men to attend an important fundraising concert on Saturday, November 29, for hurricane relief in Jamaica. Les is a lead sponsor of the event.

Entitled "Mystic Bowie and Talking Dreads present: The Itty Bitty House Jamaica Relief Fundraiser," the concert promises to be an unforgettable night of music, unity, and hope as attendees come together to rebuild Jamaica. The recent devastation has left Accompong Town, one of many, decimated — nearly every home and school must be rebuilt. Families are in urgent need of safety, shelter, and support.

This special Concert is dedicated to restoring dignity and rebuilding lives. Every beat, every song, and every donation will go directly toward helping provide materials, shelter, and renewal for those in need.

Classical Music Society Begins Holiday Season with "Messiah"

For its final meeting of 2025, and to bring in the holiday season, the Y's Men's Classical Music Society will present a video performance of Handel's "Messiah," a traditional work performed for the holidays. The performance chosen is very much an historically accurate one, intended to mirror the way the work was originally performed, by a relatively small ensemble of instrumentals and singers. It's been said that this makes it musically transparent and even more elegant.

Because of time constraints, the majority of the work will be viewed at the meeting, with a link to the complete performance provided to attendees to enjoy at home.

The meeting will be from 2:45 to 4:15 pm on Tuesday, December 2 at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

Please email Ed Bloch at edbloch71@gmail.com to reserve your seat(s) for the meeting (for room set-up purposes only).

New Y's Men Activity: The Fraud Protection Club

We are all potential victims of hacking. The new Y's Men Fraud Protection Club will provide a comfortable setting for sharing experiences, concerns and ideas about protecting our identity and assets.

They also will discuss possible approaches to proactively securing those assets independent of government agencies and banks.

The Club will meet monthly. Anyone interested in joining should contact Jeff Schwartz at jandjschwartz@gmail.com

Separately, Capt. Jillian Cabana of the Westport Police Department's Detective Bureau, who previously has spoken to Y's Men, provided this chart from the Connecticut Intelligence Bureau as part of an article on how to prevent financial crimes against seniors.

State Prosecutor in Fotis Dulos Trial to Speak to Y's Men

Step into the heart of one of Connecticut’s most chilling and high-profile murder mysteries with Richard Colangelo Jr., former Chief State’s Attorney of Connecticut. He will be the guest speaker at the Y's Men's regular Thursday morning meeting on December 11.

Hear his behind-the-scenes account of the Fotis Dulos trial—the estranged husband accused in the haunting disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, believed to have been killed in her New Canaan home just miles from Westport. This missing-body case gripped the state with suspense, legal drama, and unanswered questions.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to uncover the twists, challenges, and pursuit of justice directly from the prosecutor who helped unravel this complex and captivating case.

Colangelo now shares his insights as an Associate Professor at the University of New Haven’s Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice.
