Y's Men Present: Sports Stories with Chris "Mad Dog" Russo

Chris "Mad Dog" Russo

Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, one of the most recognizable and influential voices in sports media, will be the featured speaker at this Thursday's Y's Men meeting which will be held at The Westport Library. There will be no meeting this Thursday at the Saugatuck Congregational Church.

Russo will speak about his storied career, share fun sports stories, and discuss major league playoffs and the upcoming football season.

For nearly four decades, Russo’s passion, quick wit, and unapologetic opinions have made him a fixture for fans — from the landmark Mike and the Mad Dog era on WFAN to his work leading SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio. A Radio Hall of Fame inductee, he brings a lifetime of insight, energy, and great stories from the world of sports.

This week's Thursday morning meeting will be at The Westport Library. The usual coffee, donut and bagel social hour will begin shortly after the Library opens at 9:00 am. There will be no business meeting so the program will begin at 10:00 am.

Wall Street Titan Alan Patricof Shares Insights with Y's Men

Alan Patricof (at right) was interviewed by Mitch Rothschild at last Thursday's meeting.

Last Thursday, Y's Men heard the fascinating story of Alan Patricof from the man himself, a legendary Wall Street venture capitalist. He was interviewed by Mitch Rothschild, a successful Wall Streeter in his own right, and discussed how he prefers to invest in people and ideas, not necessarily companies.

Since 1968, he has been a stellar private equity/venture capital investor, including early-stage funding of AOL, Apple Computer, Venmo, and the like. He was also an early founder of New York Magazine and served as Chairman of the Board.

Philanthropically, Alan has donated and served on the Boards of The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Chaired the Board of the Actors Studio at The New School, and served on the Board of Directors of The New York Academy of Sciences. In 2020, he was presented with the French “Légion d’honneur” in recognition of his role in introducing venture capital to France in the early 1980s.

Y's Men Life Talk to Explore "Your Identity -- Then and Now"

The next Y's Men Life Talk meeting will be this Tuesday, October 13 at 2:00 pm in rooms 109-110 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. The topic will be: Your identity — then and now.

In the course of growing up, many people assume a sense of identity that aligns with how they see themselves at different stages of their lives. Early on, perhaps in your 20’s, you might think that your identity is defined by your job, or your commitment to a particular sport. In time, you might define your identity in terms of being a young parent, or an up-and-coming executive or even an in-demand electrician. Through it all, often unconsciously, your sense of identity may also rest on your physical prowess and your appearance.

In time, all of these associations evolve, if not dramatically or quickly, then slowly but inevitably. Who are you then? And what if none of these things captures your true identity?

Here are three questions that will be addressed at the meeting:

  • How has the person you believe yourself to be shaped the life you have chosen to live?
  • What parts of your identity have empowered you—and what parts may have quietly limited you?
  • If you could separate who you truly are from everything life has told you to be, what might you discover?

If you have any questions about Life Talk, please contact Larry Ackerman at larryackerman06@gmail.com.

Fundraising Gala for Holocaust Memorial October 13

Y's Man Paul Burger has invited all Y's Men and their guests to join the first fundraising event for Shoah Memorial at Fairfield, Inc., which he founded and serves as chairman.

The memorial was dedicated last month as Fairfield County's first Holocaust memorial monument on the Fairfield University campus. The monument, an outsized sculpture entitled She Wouldn't Take Off Her Boots, is the most visible part of the project.

But the secondary-school curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide — designed to meet Connecticut's mandate to teach this history in public schools —may be the most impactful.

The Gala to raise funds for the curriculum is on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Called L'dor V'dor — "From Generation to Generation: Forging the Living Chain of Holocaust Remembrance” -- it will be at Il Palio Restaurant in Shelton from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

The program features multi-generational Holocaust survivors and prominent speakers, a live auction including important artwork and a custom piece by Memorial artist Victoria Milstein. Sponsorships are still available.

Y’s Men who helped Paul’s four-year-long project to succeed include Dick Eisner, E. Bruce Borner, Cary Gersh, Bill Kutik and Dick Kalt.

"06880" Gives Shout Out to Y's Man Paul Liistro for Garden

Traffic island garden island at Long Lots Road and Maple Avenue North intersection.

A round-up posting on Dan Woog's "06880" blog last Friday cited the Y's Men's traffic island garden at the intersection of Long Lots Road and Maple Avenue North as "one of the most conscientious" stewardships in town. Crediting Y's Man Paul Liistro for keeping the garden looking great, the article was accompanied by the photo (above) taken by Paul.
