Tomorrow: Military History Discussion Group to Hear

Saigon Evacuee and West Point Graduate

MyLinh Brewster Shattan will be the guest of the Military History Discussion Group tomorrow.

10:30 am. Monday, September 14.

Room 211, Saugatuck Congregational Church.

Note: Meeting moved from the usual first Monday because of Labor Day.

MyLinh Brewster Shattan, author of "Raising Athena," will share her remarkable journey from evacuation from Saigon in 1975 to graduation from West Point 12 years later.

Shattan was evacuated with her mother shortly before Saigon fell. Her father, State Department officer William Brewster, was a close aide to Ambassador Graham Martin and departed with the ambassador on the final helicopter from the U.S. Embassy.

Her book explores military service, women’s expanding opportunities in the armed forces, and the experience of watching her own daughter enter West Point. Shattan’s brother, husband, and three children are also West Point graduates.

Upcoming discussions

• October 5: Bruce Angeli — Battle of the Somme

• November 2: William O’Brien — Battle of Waterloo

• December 7: Pearl Harbor anniversary program; topic and leader to be announced

All are welcome.

End of Summer/Hello Fall Beach Bash This Tuesday

Y's Men and their guests have been gathering at Compo Beach every Tuesday at about 5:00 pm. This week that get-together will be enhanced with an End of Summer/Hello Fall Beach Bash beginning at 4:30 pm in the usual meeting spot on Compo's South Beach.

Organizers are looking for an all hands operation with everyone bringing their own beverages, lots of finger food to share, and beach chairs. Cooler weather may call for a sweater, too.

Y's Man and Beach Master Jon Fox promises "a good time will be had by all, so be there!"

Dennis is a fee-only certified financial planner and advisor with more than 35 years of experience on Wall Street. His talk on Thursday covers many aspects of financial planning. He will focus on the generational differences in the approach to financial planning, why the wealth gap exists, and modeling the future of financial planning.

Holocaust Memorial Dedicated at Fairfield University

Y's Man Paul Burger, founder and chairman of Shoah Memorial at Fairfield, Inc., speaks at the dedication last week of the sculpture (foreground) entitled She Wouldn't Take Off Her Boots.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal thanked Y’s Man Paul Burger for his chutzpah creating Fairfield County's first Holocaust memorial monument at its formal dedication last week on the Fairfield University campus. In his remarks, Paul told the gathered dignitaries he didn’t want the day to be remembered as “when we finished something…but as the day we began something.”

Many Y’s Men contributed their time and money to help Paul’s four-year-long project succeed including Dick Eisner, E. Bruce Borner, Jim Lape, Bill Kutik and Dick Kalt.

Fund-raising continues to maintain the sculpture “She Wouldn’t Take Off Her Boots” and its accompanying secondary-school curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide — designed to meet Connecticut's mandate to teach this history in public schools.

Everyone is invited to the Gala on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Called L'dor V'dor — "From Generation to Generation: Forging the Living Chain of Holocaust Remembrance” -- it will be at Il Palio Restaurant in Shelton from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

The program features multi-generational Holocaust survivors and prominent speakers. Only attendees can bid in the live auction, which includes important artwork and a custom piece by Memorial artist Victoria Milstein. Sponsorships are still available.

Tickets are available now. Click here not to miss out.

Y's Men Co-Sponsor LWV Debates on October 13

As in past years, the League of Women Voters of Westport is hosting debates among candidates for Westport’s State Representative and for Senator. The Y's Men will co-sponsor the event along with other town non-profits.

The debates will take place on Tuesday, October 13, at Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave. from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. They are non-partisan and moderated by a trained moderator who is not a resident of Westport.

LWV's mission is to promote a well-informed citizenry through debates and to encourage all those who are eligible to vote.

Y's Men have been invited to submit questions for the candidates at lwvwestportct@yahoo.com

Y's Men Wives to Meet Weekly at Library Cafe

With the Y's Men returning to the Saugatuck Congregational Church for Thursday morning meetings, Y's Men wives and significant others plan to continue to meet as they did during Social Hour at the Compo Beach pavilion.

Now they will meet at The Westport Library Cafe where they can socialize, or join others who may want to walk and talk.

As Compo did during the summer, the Library venue provides a place for wives to gather after driving their spouses to the Thursday meeting and waiting to pick them up after the meeting ends.

Dewey Loselle Recalls Escape from WTC on 9/11/2001

Y's Man Past President Dewey Loselle was the first speaker of the 2026-2027 Y's Men season in Hoskins Hall last Thursday with a stirring account of escaping from the World Trade Center's North Tower on 9/11/2001.

Y's Men Past President Dewey Loselle has often asked himself "Why did I survive and others didn't?" He was at the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 at 8:46 am on the 63rd floor of the North Tower.

He survived. And his stirring, eloquent, and, at times, heartbreaking presentation reminded us all of the horror of that day, the heroism of so many, and the need, even more so after 25 years, that we never forget this attack, and the truth of what happened.

Loselle, then a partner in a consulting firm with offices near the World Trade Center, had gone to the Port Authority for a morning meeting that had been rescheduled only days earlier. He described the thunderous impact, the building’s violent swaying, and the immediate decision to leave everything behind and head for the stairs.

In a vivid account of the descent, Loselle recalled the extremely narrow, crowded, smoky stairwells, the uncertainty over what had happened, and the courage of fellow evacuees and first responders. He spoke of encountering a man in a wheelchair and his companion, who later perished while awaiting help, as well as members of FDNY Rescue Company 1 climbing upward in full gear.

Loselle and his team eventually escaped into the chaos outside, where debris fell, people fled in every direction, and the collapsing towers sent a massive dust cloud through Lower Manhattan.

His presentation, given one day before the 25th anniversary of the attacks, was both an account of survival and a plea to preserve the memory of those killed.

Van Canceled for Transport to American Classical Orchestra

Attendees of the American Classical Orchestra concert (see above listing) in New York this Thursday (September 17) had the choice of arranging their own transportation or using a 14-seat private van for the trip. Now it has been announced that there are not enough passengers to make the van economically feasible. The van needs to be filled in order to keep the cost reasonable.

The event will go forward with everyone arranging their own transportation to and from New York. For additional information, click on the link in the above listing or contact Mae Miller (wife of Y's Man Matt Miller) at bcloudsmiller@gmail.com.
