Walter Schuppe
Our featured speaker this Thursday will be Walter Schuppe, Founder of Faces of Freedom, a photojournalistic collection of black and white portraits and personal histories of U.S military veterans and holocaust survivors. Walter will give us an intimate view of their experiences and stories, providing a true picture of why they are very special.
A retired banker and CPA, Walter spent 37 years working with the management of middle market companies throughout the United States. In retirement, he manages Faces of Freedom, whose mission is to express gratitude for the sacrifices made by each individual.

| | Building People, Not Prisons Is The Fortune Society's Message | | |
Rob DeLeon, CEO of The Fortune Society, addresses Y's Men last Thursday.
When it comes to rates of per capita incarceration, the U.S. used to be aligned with similar, industrialized democracies. Now it ranks with such nations as North Korea, El Salvador, Cuba and Rwanda. Our current system is costly - $130 billion a year - ineffective (Does it make us safer?) - and indeed harmful to those incarcerated, as well as society generally. The system draws distinctions based on income, race, mental health, substance abuse, leading to the "revolving door" of recidivism. Most inmates are branded for life with one crime, and lack opportunities for a second chance once they are released.
What is The Fortune Society? It is a 60 year old 501(3)c dedicated to building people, not prisons. While recognizing accountability for crime, it "believes in the power of people to change. We help individuals with justice involvement rebuild their lives, through innovative services and advocacy." https://fortunesociety.org
What does it do? It serves meals, provides and facilitates housing where can blend in with non-incarcerated; obtains internships (for which it pays the former inmate's salary,) addresses mental health and substance abuse through licensed clinics; it works with prison officials, and advocates with elected officials, corporations all with the goal of rebuilding lives and restoring the incarcerated to meaningful and productive positions in society.
Rob DeLeon, who shared the presentation with John Eley, The Fortune Society's Treasurer, speaks from painful, personal experience. He was incarcerated for much of 10 years, beginning as a teenager, during the 1990s, when New York City was "tough on crime." He turned his life around, beginning as a youth counselor. He notes that the current New York City Director of Prisons was previously incarcerated.
The Fortune Society does "good works." It, and similar Connecticut organizations, need our support.

Y's Men's Classical Music Society to Celebrate Bands
True to its mission, the Y's Men's Classical Music Society is reaching into one of the most popular corners of the music library to feature a collection of band performances through the years and has a real-life band master as its guest. Staples High School's Director of Bands, Kevin Mazzerella will join the meeting to share his experiences as a teacher, conductor and performer in bands and ensembles through several decades. He may even be convinced to bring his own horn.
The meeting will be at the Westport Center for Senior Activities on Tuesday, October 6, beginning at 2:45 pm. Come share in some rousing music from the parade ground, the parade route, and the concert hall.

| | Fundraising Gala for Holocaust Memorial October 13 | | |
Y's Man Paul Burger at dedication of Holocaust memorial monument earlier this month.
Y's Man Paul Burger is inviting everyone to join the first fundraising event for Shoah Memorial at Fairfield, Inc., which he founded and serves as chairman.
This follows the dedication of Fairfield County's first Holocaust memorial monument on the Fairfield University campus. The monument, an outsized sculpture entitled She Wouldn't Take Off Her Boots, is the most visible part of the project.
But the secondary-school curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide — designed to meet Connecticut's mandate to teach this history in public schools —may be the most impactful.
The Gala to raise funds for the curriculum is on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Called L'dor V'dor — "From Generation to Generation: Forging the Living Chain of Holocaust Remembrance” -- it will be at Il Palio Restaurant in Shelton from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.
The program features multi-generational Holocaust survivors and prominent speakers, a live auction including important artwork and a custom piece by Memorial artist Victoria Milstein. Sponsorships are still available.
Y’s Men who helped Paul’s four-year-long project to succeed include Dick Eisner, E. Bruce Borner, Cary Gersh, Bill Kutik and Dick Kalt.
Tickets are available now. Click here not to miss out.
