Are We Truly “Wise” Men?

Our name, Y's Men, conveys an important message about who we are, but are we living up to our name? We believe so, and here’s a way we can demonstrate that!

Think about experiences, happenings, conversations, actions you’ve taken that you feel highlight something wise you’ve done in the course of your day (today or in the past) that helped someone – small things, bigger things – it doesn't matter. What matters is that you did it. We are a group of caring men with interesting lives.

How it would work: Whenever you’re moved to do so, email a short description – no more than 200 to 300 words – of something you did that had a positive impact on someone, or some group. Let’s consider these Moments of Wysdom from Y's Men!

Send your “moments” to Larry Ackerman, who leads the Y's Men Life Talk Group (larry@larryackerman.com). He will review and edit them for clarity. Then, we’ll publish these submissions on our Facebook page, periodically, when we collect a sufficient number of them.

Would you be interested in such an activity? If so, please let us know by clicking on I’M INTERESTED below. And if you wish, feel free to include a description of an initial Moment of Wysdom in the box provided.

By the way, If you already responded to this request, we’re asking you to do so one more time, since we’re dealing with technical difficulties!

Thank you.

Larry

Y's Men Gather at Compo Every Tuesday Evening

Every Westporter knows the toughest reservation to get in town is a picnic table at South Beach in Compo (to the right of the cannons). Some even break the rules (gasp!) and spread their stuff all over one table. We’ll let them live with their conscience.

Instead, we just show up early before the sunset dinner rush even starts. Around 5:00 pm every Tuesday (weather permitting). BYOEverything is the order of the day, including a beach chair. Tons of parking right there. Beach picnic rules apply; nothing made of glass or with alcohol, and maybe bring a snack to pass around.

Need more good news: no beach pass required! Just tell the nice young guy or gal in the gatehouse that you’re headed for the Y’s Men event.

Y's Men Bocce Players Meet Wednesday Mornings

The Y's Men Bocce Group plays every Wednesday (weather permitting) at Veterans Park, 909 Reef Road, in Fairfield.

Teams are formed and games start at 10:30 am and usually wrap up by noon. It's lots of fun so come play. No registration is required. Just show up and join a team of fellow Y's Men.  The Park has a bathroom.

Thursday Morning Kibbitzing Continues at Sherwood Island

As Y’s Men, we all believe in the proper and renewable use of our natural resources. In Westport that means the beach. So while we picnic on Tuesday at Compo, every Thursday at 9:00 am we gather at the Pavilion at Sherwood Island State Park.

Except for the cardboard boxes for the coffee and the great views, it’s just like the winter venue at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Same fine fellowship and donuts and bagels.

A Connecticut license plate on your car gets you in for free. Be sure to stop just beyond the young lady in the toll booth so she can see it

Come on down to chat with your fellow Y’s Men. Friends, family and guests are welcome. At 10:00 am there is an organized walk around the park.

Save the Date: Wednesday, July 30 for Annual Hot Dog Picnic

The Y’s Men have held an Annual Hot Dog Festival as a fundraiser for Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for many years at Compo Beach South. This year's picnic is scheduled for 5:00 pm on Wednesday, July 30.

As you know, Y's Men are invited to a beach picnic starting around 5:00 pm every Tuesday during the summer. You're welcome to bring your own dinner and beverage.

However, at this event, the food is provided, with hot dogs as the main attraction.

The festival is held to raise money for Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang so bring your cash or check!

Y's Men Help Make Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic A Success

Five Y's Men answered the call for volunteers at the Connecticut Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic in New Britain last month. It was deemed a huge success.

Led by Y's Man Dr. Jeff Pivor, a dentist, the volunteers were Fred Levine who helped in setting up the clinic, Ken Roffe, who was a patient escort, and Dr. Evan Mondshine and Dr. Gary Romeo who served as dentists. Two other Y's Men also signed up but had to cancel at the last minute.

All who participated said it was an amazing and gratifying experience. They had no idea that there was such a need in Connecticut and were surprised at the size of the clinic and the number of patients provided with free dental care. All expressed an interest to return next year.

Y's Men Community Service Chairman Jim Marpe helped and guided the Y's Men's participation in the event.

Non-Fiction Book Club Sets Template for Future Meetings

More than two dozen Y's Men and guests gathered for the Non-Fiction Book Club July meeting at which author Ted Aldrich gave insights on his writing of "The Partnership."

Inviting the author of a book you are reading to attend a meeting of your book club does a lot to change that meeting's dynamics. It's what the Y's Men Non-Fiction Book Club did for its July meeting.

Ted Aldrich. author of "The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration That Won World War II," attended the meeting and provided answers to a wide variety of questions about the research, publishing effort, and his motivation to write the book, among others. About 25 Y's Men and guests were there comprised of more non-members of the Club than members.

The Club hopes to follow the format of this meeting as frequently as possible. In fact, Ted Aldrich has sent out contact information to two authors he feels may be interested in meeting with the Club. All Y’s Men are invited to join the Club and enjoy reading, eating (they did have refreshments), and the friendship of other Y’s Men.

The next book the Club is reading is "The Island in the Center of the World," by Russell Shorto. It will be discussed at the meeting on Wednesday, August 13 at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Contact Y's Man Jeff Schwartz by phone or text message at 201-787-0654 for additional information.
