As a recent high school graduate, Hunter knew he wanted to go straight into the workforce. He interviewed with Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc., who contacted the PA CareerLink® to request On-the-Job Training (OJT). That is when YES to the Future received Hunter as a referral. Hunter and his YES Career Counselor completed a career interest survey, reviewed OJT expectations, and then created a resume to ensure Hunter would be a good fit for an OJT with the company. YES to the Future and Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc. worked together to plan an OJT opportunity for him.
Hunter’s OJT has allowed him to train in a variety of responsibilities, increasing his value as an employee. He is enjoying his work, learning each day, and has gained experience on multiple machines.
Hunter’s YES Career Counselor says, “Hunter is a hard worker who has been developing the skills needed for longevity in this career field and beyond!”
Not surprisingly, Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc. has already seen the value of Hunter as a promising employee and has given him a raise! Thanks to Yes to the Future and its partners, Hunter received supportive services, earned money while training, and loves his new career.

Diana, the oldest of eight children, knew a little something about being a leader and a role model. Helping to take care of her younger siblings and taking a childcare class in high school, Diana knew that she wanted to take care of children as a career.
After earning her high school diploma, Diana wasn't sure of her next steps. She visited her local PA CareerLink® and learned about the YES to the Future program. She applied immediately.
Working closely with her YES Career Counselor, Diana developed a resume and interview skills. She also attended workshops through the PA CareerLink® to gain more professional skills.
Diana was interested in a paid internship and was placed with Bostley’s Child Care and Professional Learning Centers.
With the world in a global pandemic and all daycares across the state closed, Diana used her time at home with her family to help her siblings with their virtual schooling. She was a huge asset to her entire family during this difficult period.
Recently, with daycares reopening across the state, Diana returned to her paid internship where upon completion, was offered an On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity.
Thanks to the perseverance of Diana, the help she received from her YES Career Counselor, and the support from the PA CareerLink®, Diana continues to thrive, gaining invaluable skills and confidence in her newfound position.

This September, YES to the Future hosted their annual Fall Leadership Day for participants entitled, “Thinking about Thinking.” The keynote was presented by Angela Hummel, from Angela Hummel Consulting LLC. Due to the pandemic, YES decided that this year’s Leadership Day would be entirely virtual. The event began with introductions and networking but soon got underway as Angela led a discussion on the idea of critical thinking and how to handle employment situations that require individuals to think critically before taking action. Participants were encouraged to step back from a situation before making a decision, look at the evidence, and make a decision based on their own thought processes.
Next, barriers to critical thinking and being able to make appropriate decisions was addressed. Examples of these barriers included emotional thinking, tunnel vision, being stuck in your comfort zone, and not admitting when you are wrong.
Finally, Angela provided participants with the solution to these barriers that she called the three E’s: examine, explore, and evaluate. She also said that the key to critical thinking was to slow down, take a breath, get as much information as possible before jumping to conclusions, and reflecting on the situation.
Based upon discussions in breakout rooms, reflections on videos, and participants' engagment with polls, Leadership Day was a gleaming success.
