Young Lawyers Division Newsletter
Summer 2019
The Young Lawyers Division of the Colorado Lawyers Committee is open (without charge) to any lawyer or law student who is under 40 years of age or has been in practice fewer than 8 years. The mission of the CLC YLD is to empower passionate young lawyers and law students to make a difference for children and the underserved through education, advocacy, and systemic change.

Interested in joining the YLD Board? It is a great way to strengthen your leadership skills while furthering the mission of the CLC YLD. You must be an attorney practicing at a CLC contributing law firm to apply. There are four vacant positions available: Denver Legal Night; Fundraising & Events (2 positions available); PR & Membership.
The Denver Legal Night Team: This team works with Denver Legal Night co-sponsors (Denver Bar Association YLD and Denver Access to Justice Committee) to ensure sufficient volunteer participation, host trainings, communicate with immigration and family lawyers, solicit feedback, work with Legal Night venues and partners, and safeguard the sustainability of this valuable service to the Denver community. Attendance at Denver Legal Night clinics is required on a rotating basis (on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month). The new Board member will work with Lauren Carboni (Dentons) who co-chairs the Denver Legal Night Team.

The Fundraising and Events Team: This team plans several CLC YLD educational or networking events each year, including Casino Night in February, a summer networking event in June/July, and a fall Happy Hour. Two co-chair positions are open on the Board.

The PR & Membership Team: This team is actively involved in social media and the YLD Newsletter, expanding YLD membership, working with the Fundraising & Events Team and Special Projects Team to publicize events and maintain an active CLC YLD presence in the Colorado legal community. The new Board member will work with Kelly Murphy (The Harris Law Firm P.C.) who co-chairs the PR & Membership Team.

If you would like to be considered for any of these positions, please click here to fill out an application.  Deadline to apply is August 5 th. A decision will be made by the end of August.

New this term, the YLD Board is adding a CU Law Student Representative and a DU Law Student Representative to sit on the YLD Board for a rotating two-year term. The student Board members will attend all YLD Board meetings and be the liaison between the law schools and the YLD.

In September, Abby Hinchcliff (Bartlit Beck LLP) will begin her term as YLD Board Chair, and Ryan Thurber (Polsinelli PC) will begin his term as Chair Elect. Abby is a 2012 graduate of Yale Law School and a Partner at Bartlit Beck LLP where she practices Commercial Litigation. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the YLD Strategic Planning Team. Ryan is a 2013 graduate of the University of Colorado Law School and an Associate at Polsinelli PC where he practices Health Care Law. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the YLD Special Projects Team.
Four YLD Board Members are transitioning off the YLD Board at the end of the summer: Ellie Lockwood (Snell & Wilmer), Tess Hand-Bender (Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP), Stephanie Kanan (Snell & Wilmer), and Jennie Wray (The Harris Law Firm P.C.). All four members have been on the YLD Board since its inception in 2015. The CLC YLD is planning six trial skills CLEs for young lawyers and law students. Join us for our first YLD CLE Series on August 23 rd from 8am-1pm at Polsinelli PC. Session 1 will cover Opening Statements and presenters will be: Judge R. Brooke Jackson (U.S District Court of Colorado)(subject to availability), James M. Lyons (Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP), and Maureen R, Witt (Holland & Hart LLP). Each session will be limited to 64 attendees. Cost will be $25 for YLD Members and $100 for Non-YLD Members and includes NITA materials, breakfast and lunch.

The morning starts off with a panel discussion on Opening Statements. Participants will then receive their assignments (plaintiff or defendant) and prepare their opening statements. Once complete, participants will break into small groups (8 young lawyers/students and 2 coaches) where each participant will present an opening statement (no more than 15 minutes) and be critiqued by the coaches. Participants will receive up to 4 CLE credits for attending.

The CLC YLD Grant Program funds YLD members to assist in their efforts to further the CLC mission of making a difference for children and the underserved through education, advocacy, and systemic change. Members can apply for grants to help defray costs in pro bono representation, fund materials or space for clinics or other direct services or provide scholarships for trainings that assist lawyers in providing pro bono services. This program is funded by proceeds from YLD events. Our first grant was recently awarded to a YLD member providing pro bono representation on a human trafficking case.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, based on need and availability of funding. Grants are generally limited to $1,000 per lawyer/project.
